Logan County Democrats rally for freedom of choice candidates

[July 26, 2022]   On Saturday, July 2nd, the Logan County Democrats hosted a rally in Scully Park in Lincoln focusing on Women’s Rights and the recent U.S. Supreme Court reversal of Roe vs. Wade, using it as a vehicle to promote incumbent Democrat candidate for Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.

The rally was led by Logan County Democrats Chairman Gary Davis, along with Rebecca Drake also of the LCD group. The crowd that gathered was relatively large with the majority of the attendees being women from a wide demographic of ages and ethnicities. The common goal of the majority at the rally was to protest the reversal of Roe vs. Wade.



The Supreme Court decision places the law to be decided by legislators in each state. Many of those present carried signs they had made expressing their opinions of the Supreme Court decision.

In Illinois, Governor Pritzker is “Pro-choice” and is already campaigning that he will do whatever he can to maintain the pro-choice status of the state of Illinois. In contrast, the gubernatorial candidate on the Republican side of the fall ballot is Darren Bailey, who has spoken out that he is “Pro-life.”





During the rally Drake served as the spokesperson for the LCD while Davis served as the cheerleader, leading in rally chants at appropriate times during the event.

Drake reminded attendees that while Democrats are in the minority in Logan County, statewide the party dominates. She said that all Democrats should be encouraged to vote for the incumbent candidate and noted that though Logan County numbers are small, every vote will add to the overall outcome of the November election.
 

The rally included words from a representative of Planned Parenthood of Central Illinois.





After the guest speaker, an ‘open mic’ was held with all those in attendance invited to come forward and speak in support of pro-choice or talk about their personal experiences with themselves or friends who have had abortions. Several speakers came forward to share their opinions and encourage the group to vote in the upcoming election.

The general election will be held on Tuesday, November 8th. The Logan County Clerk’s office provides voter information to Lincoln Daily News, which will be posted in our daily editions as it becomes available.
