Obituary
Fredrick William McGlaughlin, 90, of
Moline, residing in Hopedale, passed away on
Thursday, November 24, 2022, at OSF St. Francis
Medical Center.
Fred was born on January 15, 1932, in Moline, to
Earl and Bernice (Campbell) McGlaughlin. He
graduated from Moline High School and continued his
education, receiving his bachelor’s degree at
Augustana College. While at Augie, he lettered in
football, baseball, and track. It was during that
time that he caught the eye of Joy Bast, the
daughter of a local pastor. After graduating, Fred
served two years in the Army, stationed in
Heidelberg, Germany. While overseas, there was an
opportunity for Fred to teach Sunday school classes.
This sparked a passion for education which became
his lifelong career.
Upon returning to the states, he married his
sweetheart, Joy, on August 3, 1956. He got a job
teaching 6th grade and began working toward his
master’s degree at the University of Iowa. He went
on to be an elementary school principal for over 30
years in the Moline school district. Fred was also
well-known in the community for his 50-year career
as an IHSA official. He officiated football,
basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball.
While some remember him as Ump or Blue, others got
to call him Coach. Fred took great pride in the
teams that he coached, including multiple ASA state
champion softball teams.
With family at the center, Fred and Joy created a
life woven together by faith, love, and tradition.
Together, they raised three children: Maxine, Mack,
and Monica. Fred's loving presence was always felt
by his children and grandchildren through the hours
spent playing catch, taking neighborhood tandem
rides, and pushing young ones on the swings. Many
family dogs were cherished; a special companion in
later years was Rocky, the pug. Fred’s investment in
and leadership of his family will continue to be
felt for generations. |
Perhaps his greatest legacy is that
of his faith. He was an active member of Moline
Evangelical Church, and he volunteered countless
hours caring for the congregation. He is
well-remembered for his singing at Sunday services.
Fred was always whistling or humming, and there was
always a song in his heart. His love for the Lord
was apparent in how he filled his days but
especially in how he led and loved his family.
Fred is survived by his children,
Maxine (Terry) Quakenbush, Mack (Kim) McGlaughlin,
and Monica (Clint) Rogers; seven grandchildren; and
nine great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in
2009; brothers Jack and Benny McGlaughlin; and
sister Eunice Schrock.
A celebration of life service will be held at
Armington Christian Church on Saturday, December 3,
2022. Visitation will be held at 1:00; celebration
will begin at 2:00 p.m.
