Lady Toppers win Regional Championship over Cerro Gordo/Bement 51-39

[February 21, 2022] The Mount Pulaski Lady Toppers continue to play their game and on Friday night they defeated Cerro Gordo/Bement 51-39 to win the Class 1A Regional Championship at Cerro Gordo.  

Cerro Gordo/Bement was playing in front of their home crowd and that momentum from tip-off carried them to an 11-9 lead over Mount Pulaski at the end of the first quarter. The Broncos were led by Jazzi Hicks, who scored nine of the eleven first quarter points. Mount Pulaski’s offense was supported by five points from Hailee Daigh and four points from Alexis Wade. 

The Lady Toppers were able to hold Hicks to just six points in the second quarter. With Wade leading the way with seven points for Mount Pulaski, the lead changed in favor of the Lady Toppers. A big three off the bench from Kenzi Chandler helped the Mount Pulaski cause and as halftime approached, the Lady Toppers were on top 24-21.

The Lady Toppers continued to stifle the Broncos offense in the third quarter. With Wade, Chandler, Daigh, Riley May and Xzandria Turner all pouring in buckets in the third quarter, Mount Pulaski’s lead grew to 35-28 over the Broncos.

The Lady Toppers remained unfazed by the Broncos and their crowd and played a great fourth quarter en route to the win. Wade poured in nine fourth quarter free throws and with Chandler and Grace Davis each contributing three points, the Lady Toppers celebrated a 51-39 regional championship win over Cerro Gordo/Bement. 

Alexis Wade led all scorers with 22 points. Hailee Daigh tossed in 10 points for Mount Pulaski.

Mount Pulaski improved to 28-5 on the season.

Jazzi Hicks finished with 20 points for the Broncos.

Cerro Gordo/Bement finished the season with a 19-3 record.

Mount Pulaski will play Colfax (Ridgeview) at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at the Farmer City (Blue Ridge) Class 1A Sectional. Colfax (Ridgeview) brings a 23-8 record with them to the sectionals. 

Alexis Wade and Je’Na Rentmeister each advanced in the Three-Point Showdown. They will shoot on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. in Farmer City.
