[February 21, 2022]  Prior to the pandemic, Lincoln District #27 had the goal of providing a chromebook to every student by the Year 2024. All teachers had been trained to use Google features in order to implement this new technology in the classroom. The District was in the third year of the tech roll-out, and all students who did not have a chromebook had access to a lab device as they learned how to use Google Apps.

Without question, Remote Learning due to the pandemic fast-tracked that plan. In order to provide Remote Instruction back in April of 2020, all students were given a device, which left no extra or spare equipment for the District. Through a series of grant opportunities, including the Emergency Connectivity Funds (ECF), the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER), and the American Rescue Plan (ARP), the District has provided all students with a new chromebook. ECF funds made it possible for the District to purchase 800 student devices and 157 staff devices.

District staff also benefit from having a device. It has changed how the district presents training to teachers and staff. By having a device to use, staff are now able to: offer additional support to students, participate in webinar training from their buildings which saves travel time and improves the availability to attend, access video webinars to learn new skills, and communicate more easily with others within the building and across the district.

In the classroom, devices are used to supplement instruction in a variety of ways: teachers can now offer students time for independent practice of skills, students can now write collaboratively with their peers, teachers can offer immediate feedback to help students improve their work, student work is easily found and tracked, and students are more adept at using technology, which helps prepare them for a more technologically-driven world.

Throughout the past two years, the district has learned how important it is to be able to offer face-to-face instruction to students. When Remote Instruction is necessary, the 1:1 technology allows the district to continue educating their students.

Google Meet allows teachers to still meet with students. Lessons can be delivered to students at the push of a button via Seesaw, Google Classroom and/or Google Sites. Teachers can offer students real-time support from a distance. In addition, 1:1 enables teachers to deliver more personalized content to students via web programs. District #27 has purchased web program subscriptions that support the change in instructional methods such as Screencastify, IXL, eSpark, SocialStudiesWeekly, GoGuardian, and TeacherEase. With these investments in equipment and software, District #27 hopes to create students that have the necessary skills for a successful future.
