[February 23, 2022] The Kansas City Chiefs released starting linebacker Anthony Hitchens on Tuesday, a move that will save the club roughly $8.4 million against the 2022 salary cap.

Hitchens, 29, recorded 80 tackles -- four for loss -- and an interception in 15 starts last season. He started all 59 games he played over four seasons in Kansas City. He also started all 11 of the Chiefs' postseason games in that span.

"I really enjoyed the opportunity to coach Anthony over the last four years," coach Andy Reid said in a statement. "He's as tough as they come in this league and is a team-first player."

The Chiefs signed Hitchens to a five-year, $45 million contract in March 2018.

Hitchens has 685 career tackles, two interceptions, four forced fumbles and 5.5 sacks in 119 games (107 starts) with the Dallas Cowboys (2014-17) and Chiefs. The Cowboys took Hitchens in the fourth round of the 2014 draft.
