[January 06, 2022] The Lincoln Railers traveled to Charleston on Wednesday night and picked up a 44-27 Apollo Conference win over the Trojans.

Camden Nelson was tossed into the starting lineup versus the Trojans, with Aidan Gowin out due to an illness. Nelson wasted no time making an impact, sinking two first quarter threes to help the Railers out to a 12-3 lead. Elijah Pollice had four points in the first quarter as well and Payton Cook picked up a bucket, too.

The Railers big men led the way in the second quarter. Drew Hayes and Cook each scored four points and Jake Bivin contributed a basket as Lincoln continued to dominate on defense and take a 22-7 lead into halftime.

Charleston had only managed to score two threes and one free throw in the entire first half.

The Trojans had a more respectable showing in the third quarter, but Lincoln’s balanced offense kept the Railers in the lead 35-24.

Nelson stretched that lead to 38-24 with 5:25 left to play in the game. Pollice’s basket in the paint extended the lead to 40-24 and with under two minutes left to play, the Trojans’ hopes dimmed. Cook’s layup would make the score 42-27. Two final free throws from Pollice set the final score and the Railers walk away with the 44-27 Apollo Conference win.

Camden Nelson, Payton Cook and Elijah Pollice each led the Railers offense with 12 points apiece.

Lincoln improves to 13-1 on the season. Lincoln is 2-0 in the Apollo Conference.

In the JV game, the Railers dominated Charleston 65-37. Trey Schilling led Lincoln with 16 points. Drew Hayes tossed in 10 points for the Railers.

Lincoln will play at Mahomet-Seymour Friday night. The JV game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. The Varsity is set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
