Obituary
Gilbert E. “Gib” Birk, 83, of Lincoln
passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2022, at Lincoln
Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Gib was born on August 20, 1938, in Jasper County,
the son of George and Nellie (Stanley) Birk. He
married Sandra “Sandy” Thomas on October 18, 1963.
Gib is survived by his wife, Sandy of Lincoln, son,
George Birk of Bridgewater, MA, his grandchildren,
Bethany Anderson, Kim (Wil) Wernsing, Phil (Jamie)
Mahan, Tim Mahan, Kelly Ann Mahan, Shane Birk, Kelly
Jo Rauschek; great-grandchildren, CJ, Jaclyn,
Austin, Brycen, Carson, Nora, Allie, Wesley, and
Lydia.
Gib was preceded in death by his daughters, Cindy
Koerner, Debra J. Steve, and Teresa Gail Reebel, and
multiple siblings.

Gib retired from the DeWitt County
Sheriff’s office where he was the County Sheriff
between 1990 and 1994. He also served in the United
States Army for 21 years. He was a member of Open
Arms Christian Fellowship, The Lincoln American
Legion Post #263, VFW, IL Sheriff’s Association, and
Free Masons.
Services for Gib will be held at 2:00 pm on
Thursday, January 13, 2022, at
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
Visitation will take place from 12:00-2:00 pm on
Thursday, January 13, 2022, also at the funeral
home. Burial will follow the services at New Union
Cemetery in Lincoln where full military rites will
be accorded by American Legion Post #263.
Memorial donations may be made in Gib’s name to The
Wounded Warrior Project.
