On Saturday morning, the 50th National Railsplitter Festival kicked
off in Lincoln with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Several people
gathered to watch as members of the community and the event gathered
behind the special gold ribbon celebrating the 50th festival. John
and Diana Skelton did the honors of snipping the ribbon.
After the cut, Abraham Lincoln Railsplitter Association president
Darlene Begolka, vice president Bob Rankin, and the Skeltons
accepted the Lincoln Daily News Community Champion Award. The award
was given to recognize all the people, past and present, who have
gone above and beyond to keep the festival going, making Lincoln and
Logan County a great place to live and visit.
The award was presented by Karen Hargis and Lisa Ramlow of Lincoln
Daily News. |

Over the weekend, the National Railsplitter Festival in Lincoln
included several "camps" set up around the Postville Courthouse
depicting life as it would have been in the 1800s in this region.
One camp showed the lifestyle of families from furnishings to food
preparation to children's games.
These two little ones, dressed era-specific, enjoyed a game similar
to tic-tac-toe, where they used rubber rings from mama's canning
jars and placed them on pegs on a board more than likely handcrafted
by papa. Families in the 1800s learned to make do with what they
had, and most did not rely on store-bought entertainment for their
children. |

When one of the world's most popular clowns decides to sit a spell
in the small village of Elkhart, it must be a statement about how
comfortable and relaxed the little community is. Over the weekend,
Elkhart merchants were part of the traditional Christmas on Vinegar
Hill shopping event in Logan County. It was a warm and sunny day,
and visitors enjoyed finding none other than Ronald McDonald sitting
outside the Route 66 Model Raceway. |

Monday, Integrity Data in Lincoln joined the Lincoln Salvation Army
for a Red Kettle fundraising event. Staff from Integrity Data manned
the intersection of North Kickapoo and Pekin Streets with red
kettles and bells in hand.
As drivers passed through, they were able to donate to Salvation
Army from their vehicles.
Meanwhile, with their trombone and trumpet, father-son duo Harlan
and Chad Geiser played lively Christmas Music in front of the
Integrity Data building.
It was such a lively and festive afternoon that even business owner
Patrick Doolin could not escape the Christmas spirit. Donned in his
very special suit, Doolin came out to help ring the bell for
Salvation Army from time to time.
Integrity Data plans to match dollar for dollar the amount collected
in the red kettles from the Monday event. |

On Thursday evening, the Grace Lutheran Church hosted a unique
event. Santa in the Manger coupled Santa Claus with the birth of the
Christ Child. The purpose was to give a subtle lesson to all that we
can enjoy Santa Claus at Christmas time, but we should also remember
that the true meaning of Christmas comes with the birth of the
Christ Child. |

On Christmas Eve, Santa Claus came to town on a motorcycle. He
brought with him a few friends and together the group handed out
wrapped gifts to 122 local children.
Bikers for Brats is a project spearheaded by Dale Swinford, who
decided a couple of years ago he wanted to do something special for
local children who may not have many gifts under the tree on
Christmas morning. He solicited the help of some of his biker
buddies. Together they organized the event, hosted fundraisers, took
recipient applications, then went shopping for gifts for the kids on
"Santa's list." |
