Saturday night in the Downstate Classic in Galesburg the Lady Railers
faced another state-ranked opponent in no. 3 Peoria.
Peoria was entering the evening riding a seven-game winning streak,
while no. 6 Lincoln was in the midst of a three-game losing skid.
Lincoln found themselves in the running after the first quarter,
trailing just 9-8. Froebe poured in five first quarter points for
Lincoln.
Lincoln would take a 10-9 lead early in the second quarter on the drive
by Froebe. Becca Heitzig made the score 12-9 with her basket. Lincoln
would even garner a 16-13 lead after Taryn Stoltzenburg scored two
points. But Aaliyah Guyton, a sophomore, would bring Peoria back with a
three and a coast-to-coast layup that put the Lions on top 18-16. Froebe
tied the game on two free throws and immediately after it was Reese
McCuan getting the lead back for Lincoln with a couple points in the
paint. Guyton would knot the score at 20-20 with just over a minute left
in the second quarter. Just before the quarter ended, two free throws by
Froebe gave Lincoln the 22-21 lead.
The Lady Railers got baskets in the third quarter from Taryn
Stoltzenburg, Imagin Werner, Heitzig and Froebe but the Lions forged
ahead with Guyton leading the way with nine points. At the end of three
quarters, the Lions were in front 38-32.
Froebe hit a three to start the fourth quarter and this pulled Lincoln
to within three points, 38-35 the score. Back-to-back threes by the
Lions extended their lead to 44-35. With the Lady Railers not backing
down, the score was 46-40 after a three by Ryen Stoltzenburg with 2:22
left in the game. Ryen Stoltzenburg would hit another three late in the
game and the Lady Railers trailed 49-44 with 24.3 seconds left.
Unfortunately on this night the Lions would get the better opportunities
at the end and go 3-for-4 from the free throw line to seal the 52-44
win, as Froebe sat on the bench after fouling out of the game.
