Mike Moustakas hit a game-ending
sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and the host
Cincinnati Reds beat the New York Mets 1-0 on Tuesday.
The Reds earned their second walk-off win in the last three days by
surviving a dominating performance from Max Scherzer in his return
from an oblique injury and put together a rally against Seth Lugo
(1-2).
Scherzer allowed two hits and struck out a season-high 11 batters in
six overpowering innings in his first start since getting injured
May 18 against the St. Louis Cardinals.
Tommy Pham opened the ninth with a double, Tyler Naquin was
intentionally walked and Donovan Solano drew a walk to load the
bases. The Mets pulled their infield and outfield in, and the Reds
won it when Moustakas hit a 2-1 pitch to center field. Brandon Nimmo
made a running catch, but Pham easily scored.
Dodgers 5, Rockies 2
Max Muncy and Mookie Betts hit home runs while Ryan Pepiot went five
strong innings in his fourth career start as Los Angeles beat
visiting Colorado.
Justin Turner and Trayce Thompson added RBI singles as the Dodgers
improved to 5-1 on a season-high 11-game homestand. Los Angeles
earned its third consecutive victory against Colorado over the past
week, following a four-game losing streak against the Rockies.
Kris Bryant hit his first home run of the season for the Rockies,
and Ryan McMahon had three hits. Colorado has dropped the first two
games of a three-game series after winning the past two three-game
series.
Diamondbacks 6, Giants 2
Josh Rojas sparked a five-run, eighth-inning uprising and Daulton
Varsho capped it with a three-run homer as Arizona rallied past
slumping San Francisco in Phoenix.
Buddy Kennedy hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly for the Diamondbacks
before Varsho clubbed a 408-foot blast to right-center off Camilo
Doval.
Joc Pederson and Austin Wynns drove in runs for the Giants, who have
lost a season-worst six straight games and 12 of their past 15.
Rays 8, Red Sox 4
Yandy Diaz went 3-for-4 with two doubles and Kevin Kiermaier had
four RBIs to lead visiting Tampa Bay over Boston.
Kiermaier's bases-clearing double off Boston starter Nick Pivetta
started the scoring in the first inning. The Rays later broke a 3-3
tie with a four-run sixth and added one in the seventh to win for
the third time in five games.
Isaac Paredes and Rene Pinto both had two hits, while Wander Franco
scored three runs and stole a base.
Phillies 11, Nationals 0
Kyle Schwarber hit two solo home runs, J.T. Realmuto homered and
drove in three runs and host Philadelphia crushed Washington.
Alec Bohm added two hits and three RBIs, while Nick Castellanos
added two hits and two RBIs. Darick Hall also contributed three hits
and an RBI for the Phillies, who have won four of their last five.
Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez (1-1) tossed five scoreless
innings and gave up two hits. He struck out two and walked two.
Washington starter Paolo Espino (0-2) lasted only 3 2/3 innings and
allowed six hits and four runs to go along with three strikeouts and
one walk.
Mariners 6, Padres 2
The bottom two hitters in the lineup drove in four runs and Logan
Gilbert became the third major league pitcher to win 10 games this
season as visiting Seattle defeated San Diego to complete a two-game
sweep.
Dylan Moore and Sam Haggerty, the eighth and ninth hitters in the
Mariners' batting order, each drove in two runs. Gilbert held the
Padres to two runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks with one
strikeout in 5 1/3 innings.
After the Padres tied the game with an unearned run against Gilbert
in the bottom of the third, Seattle scored three in top of the
fourth to break the game open. The Padres missed an opportunity in
the second inning when singles by Luke Voit, Eric Hosmer and Nomar
Mazara loaded the bases with no one out. But Austin Nola grounded
into a forceout at home and Gilbert retired the next two hitters on
fly balls.
Marlins 2, Angels 1
Sandy Alcantara pitched eight shutout innings, scattering just two
hits and striking out 10, as host Miami edged Los Angeles.
Alcantara (9-3) made his 10th quality start in his last 11 outings.
Tanner Scott allowed a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by Taylor
Ward, but he stranded runners on first and second for his 10th save.
Garrett Cooper and Bryan De La Cruz hit solo home runs off Noah
Syndergaard (5-7) as the Marlins extended their winning streak to
six games. Syndergaard surrendered two runs and fanned eight in five
innings.
Tigers 11, Guardians 4
Victor Reyes had three hits and drove in three runs, Riley Greene
supplied two doubles and three RBIs and host Detroit thumped
Cleveland.
Miguel Cabrera contributed three hits while scoring twice and
knocking in a run as the Tigers won their third straight. Eric Haase
hit a two-run homer and scored twice.
Tigers starter Drew Hutchison (1-4) notched his first win since last
September, allowing two runs (one earned) and five hits in five
innings. Guardians starter Cal Quantrill (4-5) gave up six runs,
three earned, and eight hits in four innings.

Twins 8, White Sox 2
Alex Kirilloff homered twice among his three hits and Max Kepler,
Jose Miranda and Jorge Polanco also hit home runs to boost visiting
Minnesota past Chicago.
The Twins improved to 5-0 against the White Sox this season and will
seek a three-game series sweep on Wednesday afternoon. Minnesota's
Josh Winder (4-2), starting after Chris Archer was scratched due to
left hip tightness and went on the injured list, gave up two runs in
five innings.
Reese McGuire had three hits for the White Sox. Michael Kopech (2-6)
yielded six runs on eight hits, including four homers, in 4 2/3
innings.
Braves 7, Cardinals 1
Austin Riley and William Contreras each hit a two-run homer in the
first inning and Atlanta rolled to a win over visiting St. Louis.
The power surge was part of a five-run uprising -- the second
straight game the Braves have produced a five-run inning. The Braves
have won six of their last eight games and two straight over St.
Louis to open the four-game series.
Riley, who was 3-for-4, hit his 21st homer, third-most in the
National League, and Contreras hit his 10th homer, his first since
June 12.
Pirates 5, Yankees 2
Jack Suwinski and Daniel Vogelbach homered to help Pittsburgh quell
visiting New York.
Ben Gamel added an RBI double for the Pirates, who have won four of
six. Pittsburgh starter Jose Quintana (2-4) went five innings,
allowing one run and six hits, with seven strikeouts and no walks.
David Bednar pitched the ninth for his 13th save.
Aaron Judge and Matt Carpenter each hit an RBI single for the
Yankees. New York starter Jameson Taillon (9-2), facing his original
team for the first time, pitched 5 1/3 innings. He gave up five runs
and six hits, with five strikeouts and no walks. Yankees first
baseman Anthony Rizzo was a late lineup scratch because of lower
back stiffness.
Orioles 10, Rangers 9 (10 innings)
Cedric Mullins' two-out double in the 10th inning lifted Baltimore
past visiting Texas.
Texas overcame deficits of 4-0, 7-4 and 8-7. The Rangers loaded the
bases with one out in the 10th against Joey Krehbiel (4-3) but could
not bring home a run.
It was the second day in a row in which the Orioles topped Texas in
10 innings. Texas reliever Joe Barlow has now blown a save in the
ninth inning in back-to-back games.
Cubs 8, Brewers 3
Seiya Suzuki homered for the second straight game since coming off
the injured list as visiting Chicago claimed a victory over
Milwaukee.
Suzuki also had an RBI single as part of a four-run sixth. Cubs
starter Kyle Hendricks came out after three innings with right
shoulder soreness. Hendricks allowed two runs on two hits with two
walks in a 69-pitch outing. Matt Swarmer (2-3) got the win with two
scoreless innings in relief.
Rowdy Tellez staked the Brewers to a 2-0 lead in the first with his
17th homer after Christian Yelich had walked. Each of Tellez's last
10 hits have gone for extra bases, tying the franchise mark set by
Ryan Thompson in 2002.
Astros 9, Royals 7
Jeremy Pena and Alex Bregman homered in the fifth inning and Aledmys
Diaz and Yordan Alvarez added insurance blasts as Houston beat
visiting Kansas City to notch an eighth consecutive victory.
Astros right-hander Luis Garcia (7-5) earned the win despite five
runs and eight hits in 6 1/3 innings, with one walk and seven
strikeouts. Rafael Montero pulled off his sixth save in the ninth
with one hit, one run and two strikeouts.
Homers from MJ Melendez and Bobby Witt Jr. in the second and third
innings gave Kansas City a 4-2 lead, but the Astros pulled ahead in
a two-homer fifth. Zack Greinke (2-5) gave up 10 hits, six runs, two
walks and two strikeouts over five innings.
Athletics 5, Blue Jays 3
Stephen Piscotty homered, right-hander Adrian Martinez won his home
debut and Oakland made it two straight over visiting Toronto.
Toronto's Matt Chapman's 3-for-4 night included his 12th home run of
the season and a pair of singles. The Blue Jays out-hit the A's
10-4, but eight walks, five from losing pitcher Yusei Kikuchi (3-5),
allowed Oakland to take the lead.
Martinez (2-1) completed five innings, allowing three runs and eight
hits. He struck out five and did not walk anyone. The rookie had
begun his career with a pair of road starts, beating the Detroit
Tigers in May before losing to the Seattle Mariners in June.
