Pinch hitter Jorge Alfaro hit a
bases-loaded single to the warning track in center in the bottom of
the 10th inning, giving the San Diego Padres a 2-1 victory over the
visiting San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
The result was overshadowed by an ugly fifth-inning collision that
led to Padres left fielder Jurickson Profar collapsing on the field
and eventually being carted off. Profar was charging in and slid
just as C.J. Abrams made a lunging, over-the-shoulder catch. Abrams'
right knee caught the left side of Profar's face along the jaw line.
Both players went down.
Profar collapsed twice while trying to walk off the field, so team
doctors had him carted off the field. He was talking with the
doctors and moving his arms and legs.
Ha-Seong Kim started the bottom of the 10th on second base as the
designated runner. Giants reliever Jarlin Garcia (1-3) intentionally
walked Austin Nola before Trent Grisham reached first on a bunt
single to load the bases for Alfaro with no one outs. Nabil Crismatt
(5-1) struck out three in the top of the 10th around an intentional
walk to get the win.
Mariners 8, Blue Jays 3
Dylan Moore, Cal Raleigh and Eugenio Suarez hit home runs as Seattle
defeated visiting Toronto in the opener of a four-game series.
Raleigh and Suarez each drove in three runs for the Mariners, who
won their fifth consecutive game and improved to 13-3 over their
past 16 to reach the .500 mark for the first time since May 3. The
Blue Jays have lost six of their past seven games.
Mariners left-hander Marco Gonzales (5-9) allowed three runs, two
earned, on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings for his fifth consecutive
quality start.
Rockies 4, Diamondbacks 3
Randal Grichuk hit a tiebreaking double in the top of the ninth
inning to help Colorado beat Arizona in Phoenix.
Kris Bryant, Brendan Rodgers and Ryan McMahon also had run-scoring
hits as the Rockies ended a three-game losing streak by winning the
opener of the four-game series.
Carson Kelly homered and had three RBIs for Arizona, which lost its
second straight contest.
Dodgers 5, Cubs 3
Tony Gonsolin pitched seven strong innings and Mookie Betts hit a
pair of home runs as Los Angeles held on to beat visiting Chicago.
Gonsolin (11-0) limited Chicago to two runs and became the first
11-game winner in the National League. Alex Vesia got the last out
to strand two runners and record his first save. Gavin Lux and
Justin Turner also homered as the Dodgers won for the eighth time in
nine games.
Christopher Morel hit a home run for the Cubs. Mark Leiter Jr. (2-3)
gave up four runs on five hits over five innings in his first start
since April 27.
Cardinals 3, Braves 2 (11 innings)
Dylan Carlson came off the bench to go 3-for-3 and drive in the
go-ahead run in the 11th inning as visiting St. Louis beat Atlanta
to end a four-game losing streak.
Carlson lined a single just out of the reach of second baseman Phil
Gosselin to drive in Nolan Arenado and allow the Cardinals to
salvage the finale of a four-game series. Packy Naughton earned his
first major league save after retiring all three batters in the
bottom of the 11th.
Atlanta starter Spencer Strider threw six scoreless innings and has
allowed only one run over his last 18 innings. The right-hander
struck out a career-high 12 batters and got his first nine outs of
the game via the strikeout, the first time a Braves pitcher has
accomplished that feat since at least 1961.
Astros 5, Royals 2
Jose Altuve and Yordan Alvarez homered during a three-run fifth
inning as Houston beat visiting Kansas City in the finale of a
four-game series.
Justin Verlander (11-3) took over the major league lead in wins
after allowing two runs (one earned) over six innings. Houston
bounced back after having its eight-game winning streak snapped on
Wednesday. Houston catcher Martin Maldonado had three hits and
reached base four times.
Andrew Benintendi, Emmanuel Rivera, Edward Olivares and Nicky Lopez
each had two hits for the Royals, whose four pitchers issued a total
of 10 walks.
Yankees 6, Red Sox 5
Josh Donaldson and Aaron Hicks hit back-to-back home runs in the
third inning as part of multi-hit games to help New York edge host
Boston.
Donaldson highlighted the Yanks' offensive night with a grand slam
preceding Hicks' longball. Gerrit Cole (8-2) won despite allowing
five runs in six innings, and Clay Holmes tossed a perfect ninth for
his 16th save.

to lead visiting Pittsburgh over Cincinnati in the first game of a
day-night doubleheader.
Contreras (3-2) bounced back from yielding seven runs -- including
three homers -- in only 1 2/3 innings in his last start. He
scattered four hits, struck out seven and walked just one on
Thursday. Diego Castillo homered and Michael Chavis had a two-run
double for the Pirates.
Donovan Solano homered and had three hits for the Reds. Cincinnati
starter Mike Minor (1-6) retired the first 10 batters he faced but
was charged with four runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Reds 5, Pirates 1 (Game 2)
Jonathan India's RBI single broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning as
host Cincinnati split a day-night doubleheader with Pittsburgh.
Cincinnati reliever Reiver Sanmartin (1-4) pitched the final 2 2/3
innings for his first win since Oct. 3, 2021. All three of
Sanmartin's career wins have come against the Pirates.
Tough-luck loser Bryce Wilson (1-5) was cruising through the Reds'
lineup until Tyler Naquin homered with two outs in the sixth to tie
the game at 1.
Phillies 5, Nationals 3
Rookie Darick Hall hit a solo home run, doubled and drove in two
runs to lift host Philadelphia past Washington.
Didi Gregorius added an RBI triple for the Phillies, who won two of
three in the series. Nick Nelson (3-1) threw two scoreless innings
to pick up the win in relief. Seranthony Dominguez pitched a
scoreless ninth and earned his third save.

added an RBI double and Maikel Franco chipped in with an RBI single.
Nationals starter Joan Adon (1-12) lasted only four innings,
allowing six hits and four runs.

six-game winning streak.
Jake Reed retired all six batters he faced to complete the Mets'
12th shutout of the season.
Tigers 2, White Sox 1
Rookie Beau Brieske didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning,
Javier Baez homered and visiting Detroit held off a late Chicago
rally to win a season-high fifth straight.
Brieske (2-6) pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings, yielding two hits and
a walk while striking out four. Gregory Soto gave up a run in the
ninth on Luis Robert's RBI double but still earned his 17th save.
White Sox starter Dylan Cease (7-4), who entered the contest 10-0
with 1.91 ERA in 11 career starts vs. Detroit, gave up one run on
three hits in six innings.
Orioles 4, Angels 1
Adley Rutschman homered, Ryan Mountcastle drove in two runs and
Jordan Lyles pitched six-plus strong innings to lead host Baltimore
over Los Angeles.
Anthony Santander had two hits for the Orioles, who have won five in
a row for the first time since winning six straight Aug. 7-13, 2020.
Starter Jordan Lyles (5-7) yielded a run on five hits, with four
strikeouts and two walks, as he picked up his first win since June
