[July 09, 2022]  Zack Wheeler pitched seven scoreless innings and Alec Bohm hit two homers as the visiting Philadelphia Phillies blanked the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 Friday night.

Wheeler (8-4) allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five batters as the Phillies won for the sixth time in their last eight games. This was the sixth time this season Wheeler didn't allow a run.

He has thrown 14 scoreless innings against the Cardinals this season. In his previous start against them on July 3, Wheeler allowed just four hits and a walk in a 4-0 victory.

Seranthony Dominguez dispatched the Cardinals in the eighth and Brad Hand closed out the ninth inning to earn his fourth save.

Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright (6-7) threw a complete game while allowing the two runs on five hits and no walks. This was the ninth time this season that Wainwright allowed two earned runs or fewer in a start.

But the slumping Cardinals lost for the seventh time in their last nine games.

Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado hit two-out singles for the Cardinals in the first inning before Nolan Gorman grounded out to end the threat.

The Cardinals got two-out singles from Gorman and Dylan Carlson in the fourth inning before Wheeler struck out Tommy Edman to strand them.

Wainwright held the Phillies to two hits in the first five innings, but then Bohm led off the sixth inning with a homer over the center field wall.

Arenado hit a two-out single in the sixth inning and moved to second on a balk. Wheeler walked Gorman, but he struck out Carlson to strand two more runners.

With two outs in the eighth inning, Bohm hit his second homer, this time to left, to put the Phillies up 2-0.
