Dodgers erase 6-run deficit, beat Cardinals

Alberto hit the game-winning single as the visiting Los Angeles
Dodgers rallied from a 6-0 deficit to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals
7-6 on Wednesday.
Will Smith hit a two-run homer and Trea Turner hit a two-run single
for the Dodgers, who won for the 12th time in their last 14 games.
Dodgers starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin allowed a career-high five
earned runs on seven hits in five innings. It was the first time
since Sept. 30, 2021 that he allowed more than two earned runs. He
had made 16 starts without doing so since then.
Reliever Craig Kimbrel (3-4) pitched the eighth inning to earn the
victory and Evan Phillips closed out the ninth to earn his first
save.
Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright threw 5 1/3 scoreless
innings. He allowed four hits and four walks.
Giovanny Gallegos (2-4) allowed two ninth-inning runs to take the
loss.
Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer and Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run
single for the Cardinals, who saw their three-game winning streak
end.
The Cardinals seized a 4-0 lead in the third inning. Andrew Knizner
singled, Tommy Edman doubled and Goldschmidt followed with a two-run
single to right field. Arenado then smacked his two-run blast.

The Cardinals extended their lead to 5-0 in the
fourth inning when Lars Nootbaar hit a single and scored on
Knizner's double.
They made it 6-0 in the sixth after Albert Pujols had a base hit and
eventually scored on Nootbaar's single.
The Dodgers broke through in the seventh inning when Freddie Freeman
hit a single and Smith smacked a homer to cut the lead to 6-2 off
Drew VerHagen.
They continued their comeback in the eighth on relievers Genesis
Cabrera and Junior Fernandez. Cody Bellinger hit a single, Max Muncy
walked for the fourth time, Mookie Betts hit an RBI double and
Turner hit a two-run single to cut the lead to 6-5.
