Even the library staff got involved in the fun.
Others enjoyed blowing bubbles with various size bubble wands.
United Community Bank staff provided donuts, juice boxes and water
for hungry and thirsty children.
The theme for the summer reading program is “Reading Beyond the
Beaten Path.”
Activities for various age groups will begin Monday, June 14. Crafts
will be related to the theme.
Youth Services librarian Donna Cunningham said there
will be activities in the library annex almost every day of the week
from June 14th through July 21st.
Mondays from 2-2:30 p.m. and 2:30-3 p.m. are the
stream programs for kindergarten through second graders.
Tuesdays from 2-2:30 p.m. and 2:30-3 p.m. are the explorer programs
for third through fifth graders.
Each week, these groups will be doing a craft project.

For instance, the first week, kids in both programs
will make a “perler beads” key chain. The craft is done by putting
the beads in a plastic tray and ironing them. The next several weeks
will include campfire art, nature art, let’s go camping craft,
paracord bands and woodland animal crafts. During the final week’s
program, kids will create campfire dioramas using graham crackers.
Wednesday story times will be offered in the library annex for
babies through preschoolers. On June 15, these groups will build
truck crafts. Cunningham said the kids will use rectangles,
triangles and squares to make the truck. Other story times will
include binocular crafts, sock bunny crafts, campfire crafts, space
rocket crafts and bird nest crafts.
Thursdays at 10 a.m. will be programs for kids of various age
groups. The program Thursday, June 16 will be a show by Juggling
Jeff. Programs the other weeks will be Spoon Man, Music of Frogs by
the Macon County Conservation District, Comedy Magician Richard
Landry and MAD Science. The summer’s final program will be the Silly
Safari, which has been a big hit with kids for several years.
Every other Friday on June 24, July 8 and July 22, teen time will be
offered at 2 p.m. with activities oriented toward sixth through 12th
grades. They will be making birdhouses, paracord bands and campfire
dioramas using graham crackers.
From Monday, June 13 through Friday, June 17, a Jr. Chef Cooking
program will be held from 2 -4 p.m. in the basement of the main
library. Cunningham said there was quite a bit of interest in this
program with many signing up to be a part of it.
Starting June 13, children will be able to turn in book logs to earn
prizes. They will also receive reading badges each week.
Local artist and library employee Tony DiPasquale created this
year’s summer reading program t-shirt design. DiPasquale also helped
draw the animals for the reading program bulletin board and other
artwork around the library stacks in the children's department.
As children read beyond the beaten path, it should be a fun filled
summer at the Lincoln Public Library.
