A new weekly public affairs show is being added to
the WLCN 96.3 FM schedule.
The 4 PM 411 will debut June 21 and will feature interviews with
public figures from the area, focusing on matters of public interest
in an educational and informative manner.
The scheduled guest for the inaugural show is Kelsi Edwards with the
Logan County Pride organization, which holds its 2nd Annual Logan
County Pride Festival on June 25 at the Logan County Fairgrounds in
Lincoln.
WLCN’s The 4 PM 411 show will air Tuesdays at 4 PM each week and
will be hosted by WLCN marketing manager and morning show co-host
Loyd Kirby.
“Original Federal Communications Commission regulations state that a
portion of radio station programming be done in the public interest,
convenience and necessity,” Kirby said. “This show helps meet that
requirement, highlighting local issues and items of interest to a
different audience segment.”
Most WLCN public affairs programming, such as the popular Viewpoint
program with iconic local hosts Bill Gossett and Judy Busby,
traditionally has aired weekday mornings. The Tuesday afternoon
timeslot was chosen in an effort to reach additional audience
members.
“Much of our programming has aired during times when many listeners
are arriving at work or getting kids to school,” Kirby said. “This
show airs later as we try to make programming available to other
segments of our audience.”

In addition to 96.3 FM, The 4 PM 411 is slated to be

livestreamed via WLCN’s YouTube channel. Recordings of the show will
be available in WLCN’s Mixlr and YouTube archives.
Kirby has been full-time marketing manager and morning show co-host
at WLCN since March 2021 but worked for the station prior to that,
providing recorded and then livestream video coverage since 2012 of
LCHS Railer football and basketball games and other special events.
Kirby served as a judge in the video news and copy editing
categories for the 2022 IHSA state journalism finals in Normal. He
taught broadcasting and journalism while serving as faculty adviser
and general manager at the Lincoln College FM radio station from
1989 to 1998.
He also has worked and generated content for several
local news organizations, including Lincoln Daily News.
Kirby is a member of the National Electronic Media
Association/National Broadcasting Society-AERho.
