MLB roundup: Yankees extend streak with rally vs. Astros

[June 24, 2022] Aaron Hicks hit a tying three-run homer in the ninth inning and Aaron Judge followed with a game-ending, two-out single as the New York Yankees rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Houston Astros on Thursday to extend their home winning streak to 15 games.

Judge's second walk-off hit of the season occurred a day before he heads into an arbitration hearing after rejecting a long-term contract offer before the season. Judge's hit gave the Yankees their longest home winning streak since 1961. The team record is 18 games, at the original Yankee Stadium in 1942.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run homer for New York, and Miguel Castro (4-0) pitched one scoreless inning for the win.

Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez hit three-run homers for Houston. Closer Ryan Pressly (1-2) took the loss.

Mariners 2, Athletics 1

No-hit by Oakland's Frankie Montas two outs into the eighth inning, visiting Seattle took advantage of reliever A.J. Puk's wildness to score twice in the ninth and complete a three-game sweep of the A's.

Both Mariners runs scored on wild pitches after Puk had replaced Zach Jackson (1-2) with two on and two outs in the ninth.

Christian Bethancourt's two-out single off Mariners starter Robbie Ray in the first had scored Sheldon Neuse with the only run of the first eight innings.

Twins 1, Guardians 0

Nick Gordon hit a solo home run and four pitchers combined for a shutout as Minnesota beat visiting Cleveland.

Twins starter Devin Smeltzer (4-1) and relievers Joe Smith, Jhoan Duran and Caleb Thielbar teamed up to limit the Guardians to five hits. Minnesota avoided a three-game sweep in the series finale.

Guardians starter Zach Plesac (2-5) took the hard-luck loss despite allowing only one run on three hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out six.

Dodgers 10, Reds 5

Los Angeles hit a season-high five home runs in support of six strong innings from Clayton Kershaw to complete a three-game road sweep of Cincinnati.

Freddie Freeman, Cody Bellinger, Max Muncy, Will Smith and newcomer Trayce Thompson all went deep to help the Dodgers complete a seven-game season sweep of the Reds. Bellinger and Freeman each drove in three for the Dodgers, who have defeated the Reds nine straight times. In his third start back from hip joint inflammation, Kershaw (5-1) held the Reds to one run on seven hits over six innings, striking out seven with one walk.

Tommy Pham drilled a three-run homer and recorded a pair of outfield assists for the Reds, who dropped their seventh straight and finished 0-6 on their homestand.

Marlins 3, Rockies 2

Avisail Garcia drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as host Miami completed a three-game sweep, courtesy of a victory over Colorado.

The Marlins won their sixth straight home game after limiting Colorado to 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position. In total, the Rockies stranded 13 runners on base. Steven Okert (5-0) pitched one scoreless inning for the win. Tanner Scott pitched a scoreless ninth for his seventh save of the season.

Colorado grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third with a rally that began with a two-out, none-on walk to C.J. Cron. Brendan Rodgers followed with an RBI double and Ryan McMahon added a run-scoring single.

Braves 7, Giants 6

Dansby Swanson hit a pair of home runs and had three RBIs as Atlanta held on to defeat visiting San Francisco.

Braves starter Kyle Wright (8-4) allowed four runs on 10 hits, with one walk and four strikeouts, in 5 1/3 innings. Kenley Jansen allowed a home run in the ninth to Joc Pederson but still notched his 19th save. It was the 369th of his career -- 10th on the all-time list.

San Francisco's Austin Slater hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, and the Giants scored twice in the sixth to make it 7-4. Thairo Estrada got a run home with a fielder's choice and Tommy La Stella drove in another with a ground-rule double. Atlanta right-hander Jesse Chavez entered with one out and struck out two of the three batters he faced to end the threat.

Pirates 8, Cubs 7 (10 innings)

Michael Chavis hit a game-tying home run in the eighth inning and a game-ending bloop single in the 10th to give Pittsburgh a win over visiting Chicago.

Against Chicago's Scott Effross (1-3) in the 10th inning, Ke'Bryan Hayes was the automatic runner for the Pirates. Bryan Reynolds was intentionally walked before Chavis drove in Hayes on a 0-1 pitch. Hayes and Reynolds also hit home runs, and Oneil Cruz had an RBI double.

Nico Hoerner and Alfonso Rivas each had a two-run single in the eighth inning as the Cubs took a 7-6 lead. Patrick Wisdom added an RBI single. Chicago starter Justin Steele allowed six runs (five earned) and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings, with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Brewers 6, Cardinals 4

Tyrone Taylor hit a three-run homer to help Milwaukee to a win against visiting St. Louis while earning a split of the four-game series.

Willy Adames also homered for Milwaukee, which won the opener of the series before dropping the next two. Brewers starter Jason Alexander (2-0) allowed four runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Brad Boxberger and Devin Williams combined for 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief before Josh Hader struck out two in the ninth for his 21st save.

Andrew McCutchen started the third with a single but was thrown out while trying to score standing up on a base hit by Victor Caratini. Taylor stepped up, however, and blasted the three-run homer for a 4-2 lead. Lars Nootbaar homered to start the fifth and trimmed the deficit to 4-3. Adames homered to lead off the bottom half of the inning and re-establish the two-run lead at 5-3.

Orioles 4, White Sox 0

Rookie Adley Rutschman recorded a career-high three RBIs and Dean Kremer tossed 5 2/3 strong innings to lift Baltimore to a victory at Chicago.

Rutschman belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning and added an RBI double in the sixth. Cedric Mullins chipped in an RBI single in the ninth for the Orioles, who logged their fifth win in the past seven games. Kremer (2-1) allowed seven hits and a walk while striking out four.

Seby Zavala had two doubles and Jose Abreu also had two hits for the White Sox, who have lost two straight after winning six of their previous eight games. Johnny Cueto (1-4) yielded three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Phillies 6, Padres 2

Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto hit home runs in a five-run sixth inning as Philadelphia prevailed at San Diego.

Phillies starter Ranger Suarez (6-4) allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks over 7 1/3 innings -- his longest outing of the season. He struck out three.

Padres starter Joe Musgrove (8-1) lasted six innings and gave up six runs, matching the total from his previous six starts. He yielded seven hits and a walk while striking out one.
