[June 25, 2022]

At the Tuesday June 14, 2022 Committee of the Whole meeting of the Lincoln City Council, Alderman Sam Downs asked that the council consider adding Utility Terrain Vehicles (UTV) to the new golf cart ordinance.

The golf cart ordinance allows the operation of golf carts on city streets where the speed limit is posted at 30 mph or less and where the street is not also considered to be a state highway.

Because of the highway restriction by the Illinois Department of Transportation the golf carts may not be driven on Keokuk Street, Woodlawn Road, Fifth Street, Logan Street, Limit Street Union Street and Kickapoo Street (Business 55 until the intersection of Keokuk and Kickapoo – ie. north of the traffic lights on Keokuk)

On the June 14, Downs said that he had heard from a constituent that wondered if the city would be willing to add the UTV’s to the ordinance with all the same restrictions including driver age, speed limits, required safety equipment on the vehicle, and a permit for use issued by the city of Lincoln.

Kevin Bateman said he supported the suggestion and had wanted UTV’s to be included in the first go around.

Tony Zurkammer noted that many communities do the same, adding golf carts and UTV’s under the same rules and regulations.

Aldermen quickly agreed to add the UTV’s and the vote to do so was taken at the June 21st voting session.

The new rule goes into effect immediately.

To obtain a permit for a UTV, visit the city clerk’s office in Lincoln City Hall.

Utility Terrain Vehicles, or UTVs, are built and used more for work than recreation. They are large, powerful, able to seat passengers side by side, and built with lots of storage space.
