Sandin and Justin Holl each had a goal and an assist for
Toronto. Michael Bunting, William Nylander and Pierre Engvall
also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won three in a row.
Mitchell Marner and John Tavares each added two assists for the
Maple Leafs.
Petr Mrazek made 30 saves for Toronto.
Tom Wilson scored two goals and Conor Sheary added one for the
Capitals, who have lost three straight. John Carlson added three
assists.
Ilya Samsonov allowed three goals on 10 shots in the first
period and was replaced by Vitek Vanecek to open the second
period. Vanecek made 16 saves.
Toronto led 3-1 after the first period.
Toronto took advantage of a Washington mistake in the corner to
take the lead at 2:35. Martin Fehervary failed to control the
puck and Marner pounced on it and fed Bunting, who scored his
19th goal of the season on a high shot from the low slot.
Washington came close at 5:57 of the first when the puck
trickled past Mrazek after Garnet Hathaway's deflection, but a
video review showed it did not completely cross the goal line.
Sheary scored his 12th goal, deflecting Nicklas Backstrom's shot
at 16:23.
Forechecking by Tavares behind the net set up Nylander, who
scored his 21st goal from the right edge of the crease at 18:49.
Holl scored his second goal of the season when jammed home a
loose puck in the crease at 19:58.
Wilson scored on a power play at 10:11 of the second period when
he deflected Alex Ovechkin's shot. Engvall was off for tripping.
Wilson tied the game with a short-handed goal at 1:44 of the
third period, shooting from the left circle on a 2-on-1 break
for his 17th goal of the season.
Sandin scored his third goal this season at 16:37 of the third
on a shot from the left circle, converting Holl's cross-ice
pass.
Engvall scored into an empty net at 18:59 of the third.
