MLB transaction roundup: Padres reportedly sign OF Tommy Pham

[March 24, 2022] The Cincinnati Reds agreed to terms with veteran outfielder Tommy Pham on a one-year deal with a mutual option for another season, the Cincinnati Enquirer and MLB.com reported Wednesday.

 


According to the Enquirer, the contract is worth $7.5 million.

Pham, 34, hit .229 with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs in 155 games for the San Diego Padres last season.

He previously spent parts of five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals before playing for the Tampa Bay Rays (2018-19) and the Padres (2020-21). He owns a lifetime .265 average with 97 home runs and 300 RBIs in 732 career games.

--The Seattle Mariners are signing right-handed relief pitcher Sergio Romo to a one-year contract, multiple outlets reported.

The deal is for $2 million plus a $250,000 bonus and is pending a physical, per the reports.

The Mariners would be the seventh team for the 39-year-old Romo.

Romo went 1-1 with a 4.67 ERA and three saves in 66 appearances last season with the Oakland A's. He has a 42-35 career mark with a 3.10 ERA and 137 saves in 798 games (five starts) in his 14-year career.

--Second baseman Hanser Alberto agreed to a one-year, $1.6 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The deal has a club option of $2 million for the 2023 season with a $250,000 buyout.

Alberto, 29, batted .270 with two homers and 24 RBIs in 103 games last season with the Kansas City Royals.

In order to make room on the roster, the Dodgers designated infielder Matt Beaty for assignment. Beaty, 28, batted .270 with seven homers and 40 RBIs in 120 games last season with Los Angeles.

--The Chicago Cubs signed righty reliever Mychal Givens to a one-year contract with a mutual option for 2023.

Givens, 31, has made 360 relief appearances, accumulating a 25-20 record with a 3.41 ERA and 29 saves in his career with the Baltimore Orioles (2015-20), Colorado Rockies (2020-21) and Cincinnati Reds (2021). In split duty last season with the Rockies and Reds, Givens was 4-3 with a 3.35 ERA and eight saves in 54 games.

Cubs infielder Sergio Alcantara was designated for assignment.

--Right-handed reliever Bryan Shaw is returning to the Cleveland Guardians in 2022, The Athletic reported.

Shaw, 34, made a second go-round in Cleveland last season after pitching there from 2013-17. He went 6-7 with a 3.49 ERA and two saves in an MLB-leading 81 appearances in 2021.

Since making his MLB debut in 2011, Shaw also has pitched for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Rockies and Mariners. In his career, he has a 37-43 record and 3.78 ERA with 14 saves in 656 1/3 innings spread over 693 games.
