Spring training roundup: Cardinals score 29 runs, rout Nationals

[March 31, 2022] Paul DeJong went 3-for-3 with a homer and five RBIs, and Conner Capel went 3-for-3 with four RBIs as the visiting St. Louis Cardinals steamrolled the Washington Nationals 29-8 on Wednesday at West Palm Beach, Fla.

 


Paul Goldschmidt went 4-for-4 with a solo homer and Yadier Molina had a homer and three RBIs as the Cardinals went 15-for-25 with runners in scoring position while racking up 26 hits. St. Louis scored 15 of its runs in the eighth inning when it sent 19 batters to the plate.

Washington starter Anibal Sanchez and reliever Cade Cavalli each were charged with 10 earned runs. Josh Bell and Gilbert Lara each slugged three-run homers for the Nationals.

Orioles 7, Rays 6

Kelvin Gutierrez lined a three-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as Baltimore stunned Tampa Bay at Sarasota, Fla. Miles Mastrobuoni homered for the Rays.

Twins 9, Pirates 4

Byron Buxton hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, and Miguel Sano added a two-run shot as Minnesota knocked off visiting Pittsburgh at Fort Myers, Fla. Diego Castillo hit two homers and drove in three runs for the Pirates.

Red Sox 10, Braves 7

Rafael Devers, Christian Vazquez and Jonathan Arauz each homered to help Boston outlast visiting Atlanta at Fort Myers, Fla. Travis d'Arnaud, Adam Duvall and Alex Dickerson all homered in the fifth inning for the Braves.

Tigers 7, Phillies 1

Left-hander Tarik Skubal struck out five and allowed three hits in four scoreless innings as Detroit defeated host Philadelphia at Clearwater, Fla. Bryce Harper homered in the sixth inning for the Phillies' lone run.

A's 5, Reds 4

Christian Bethancourt homered while Tony Kemp and Sean Murphy had two hits apiece to lead Oakland past Cincinnati at Mesa, Ariz. The Reds' Joey Votto hit a two-run triple.

Cubs 8, Mariners 5

Seiya Suzuki and Clint Frazier homered for Chicago in a win over Seattle at Mesa, Ariz. Mariners starter Marco Gonzales allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings but struck out seven.

Giants 9, Royals 5

Arquimedes Gamboa socked his third homer of the spring as San Francisco topped Kansas City at Surprise, Ariz. Luke Williams and Alex Blandino also went deep for the Giants, while the Royals got a homer from Kyle Isbel.

White Sox 7, Rangers 0

Dylan Cease tossed four innings of two-hit ball as five Chicago pitchers combined for a four-hitter against Texas in Phoenix. Romy Gonzalez, Seby Zevala and Zach Remillard hit seventh-inning homers for the White Sox.

Diamondbacks 9, Rockies 2

Jake McCarthy's three-run homer paced Arizona's 15-hit attack in a rout of Colorado at Scottsdale, Ariz. Rockies starter German Marquez fanned six while yielding one run in 3 2/3 innings.

Padres 4, Brewers 2

Nick Martinez fired four shutout innings as San Diego defeated Milwaukee at Peoria, Ariz. The Padres' Manny Machado hit a two-run homer.

Astros 5, Mets 3 (10 innings)

Franklin Barreto's two-run, 10th-inning homer lifted Houston past New York at Port St. Lucie, Fla. Michael Brantley and Yordan Alvarez homered for the Astros before the Mets' Pete Alonso socked a game-tying, three-run shot in the sixth inning.

Blue Jays 11, Yankees 3

Santiago Espinal's three-run homer and Nathan Lukes' solo shot propelled Toronto past New York in Tampa. Yankees starter Manny Banuelos threw three shutout innings.

Dodgers 12, Guardians 1

Julio Urias allowed just two hits in four scoreless innings as Los Angeles topped Cleveland at Goodyear, Ariz. The Dodgers' AJ Pollock hit a solo homer, and Eddy Alvarez blasted a grand slam.
