Obituary

It is with great sadness to announce the passing of Elton R. Hurley, 78, of New Holland, on April 23, 2022 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield. Elton was a kind, loving, and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a true friend to anyone who knew him.

The son of Claude Hurley and Dorothy Dalbey, Elton was born on March 26th, 1944, in Lincoln. He married Teresa L. Rogers on May 31st, 1975 at Holy Family Church in Lincoln and has celebrated more than 47+ years of marriage. Together, Elton and Teresa raised their four children: Nick Hurley and his wife Jenny, Kevin Hurley, Aaron Hurley, and Chris Hurley and his wife Amanda. Elton is also blessed with six grandchildren to carry on his legacy: Aidan, Olivia, Carter, Riley, Brynn, Rowan Hurley, along with his three siblings: Claude Hurley, Cheryl Tarr, and Dana Ott.

During his lifetime, Elton served as Boy Scout Leader for Troop 6 for over fifteen years while his four sons were active scouts; he helped guide each one of his sons to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. As a scout leader with Troop 6, he inspired and mentored young scouts while also organizing events, pinewood derby races, camping trips, food drives, and fundraisers; he also volunteered at Holy Family Catholic Church's Food Pantry.

He was also an active member of the congregation of Holy Family Catholic Church and a Third-Degree Knight with the Lincoln Knights of Columbus Council #1250. His past times included traveling with his family to his favorite vacation spots of Branson, Missouri and Fairfield Bay, Arkansas where he loved to spend time boating, hiking, playing mini-golf, and spending time with friends and family. He was a friend to everyone and will be deeply remembered for the substantial impact he made on the lives of all those who knew him.

A visitation will take place to celebrate his life with friends and family in Lincoln, on Monday, May 2nd from 5:00pm to 7:00 pm at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home (127 South Logan Street). A funeral mass will be officiated by Rev. Joseph Dondanville at 10:00 am on Tuesday, May 3rd at Holy Family Catholic Church (316 South Logan Street) and burial will immediately follow the mass at the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Please join us to celebrate the life and legacy of Elton Hurley, our dear friend, husband, father, grandfather, and a truly wonderful man!
