Families can learn how to share and preserve the stories behind treasured keepsakes at a special “Memory Keepers” event May 15 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Storyteller Susan Stone will lead games and activities that bring out the stories behind family treasures, whether those tales are funny, sad, weird or a unique mixture. Then she’ll guide everyone in art activities so each family will have “story art” to take home.

“Memory Keepers: Making Stories from Our Treasures” is the perfect chance for parents or grandparents to share a fun, free activity with children 7 and up. It runs 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 15, and includes a visit to the ALPLM’s latest exhibit, “Stories of Survival: Object. Image. Memory.”

To register, just visit PresidentLincoln.

Stone has been a professional storyteller and educator for more than 30 years. She served as an adjunct faculty member at National-Louis University and taught at the Piven Theatre Workshop. She has performed and taught at museums, schools, festivals, and colleges all over the country. Learn more about her at susanstone-storyteller.com.

The “Stories of Survival” exhibit features treasured items kept by people who survived horrors such as the Holocaust, Rwandan genocide and the killing fields of Cambodia. The objects are displayed along with photographs on which survivors have written their feelings and stories.

“Stories of Survival” was created by Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center. It will be at the ALPLM through Jan. 22, 2023. The exhibit is included with the regular museum admission price.

The mission of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum is to inspire civic engagement through the diverse lens of Illinois history and sharing with the world the life and legacy of Abraham Lincoln. We pursue this mission through a combination of rigorous scholarship and high-tech showmanship built on the bedrock of the ALPLM’s unparalleled collection of historical materials.
