Heartland Community College Commencement set for May 13

 

[May 10, 2022]   Heartland Community College’s 30th annual commencement celebration takes place Friday, May 13, 2019 at 6:30 p.m. at the Grossinger Motors Arena, 101 S. Madison St. in downtown Bloomington.

The ceremony will recognize those graduating with associate degrees and certificates as well as students from the Heartland Academy for Learning Opportunities (HALO) and Adult Education programs. Approximately 360 graduates are expected to participate.

Mia Kaufman selected as student speaker

Mia Kaufman, from Clinton, Illinois, made the most of her time at Heartland Community College. Kaufman as able to obtain her Associate in Arts from Heartland Community College in one year, and in that short time was able to be highly involved in the various activities and opportunities the College has to offer. Kaufman served as the 2021-22 Student Government Association President, secretary of the national Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and was an active member of both Heartland's Honor Society and Political Science Club. After graduation from Heartland, Kaufman will be attending the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign to major in Global Studies.

Melissa Marx selected as 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient

Melissa Marx, AA ’06, is the College’s 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient and will be recognized at the commencement ceremony.

The award recognizes notable Heartland alumni who demonstrate exceptional achievement in their profession and make a positive impact on their community. Awardees are selected from nominations by fellow Heartland alumni, faculty, staff, students and community members.

Marx is Senior Director of Operations for Outpatient Imaging Affiliates. She is a passionate advocate for screening exams for women and developed fundraising activities held in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Marx serves on the boards for Professional Women of McLean County, McLean County Chamber of Commerce, Heartland Community College Foundation, and Heartland Community College Radiography. She previously served on the boards of the Pink Panthers of Community Cancer Center as well as the Bloomington/Normal Jaycees.
