Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel hit back-to-back homers to open
the eighth inning, and rally the Chicago Cubs to a 5-4 victory over
the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.
With the Cubs trailing 4-3 and facing Arizona's Ian Kennedy (3-3),
who allowed one home run in 18 1/3 innings this season entering this
contest, Wisdom (two hits) tied the contest with a drive into the
left-center field bleachers for his third homer in three days.
Schwindel then put Chicago -- which blew an early 3-0 lead -- ahead
with a shot into the left-field stands.
It was the second consecutive day Schwindel and Wisdom hit
back-to-back homers, and helped the Cubs snap a four-game losing
streak.
Keegan Thompson (4-0) pitched the final three innings for Chicago,
which won for just its seventh time in 22 home games.
A day after using a three-run eighth inning to tie a game it trailed
4-0 and went on to win 7-6 in 10, Arizona erased a 3-0 hole with
three RBI singles in the sixth. Geraldo Perdomo then led off the
seventh inning with a single to left field and eventually scored the
tiebreaking run on David Peralta's groundout.

Arizona's Merrill Kelly yielded only a bases-loaded
triple to P.J. Higgins in the second, and lasted five innings for
the Diamondbacks, who couldn't hold on for their first four-game
sweep at Chicago.
Chicago starter Wade Miley didn't allow a run at home in his first
12 innings as a Cub until Ketel Marte's RBI single with two outs in
the sixth. Marte then scored on Pavin Smith's single to center and
Jake McCarthy tied the game at 3-3 with a run-scoring single of his
own. That proved to be the last inning of work for Miley.
Called up from Triple-A Iowa with Willson Contreras day-to-day
because of a hamstring issue, Higgins cleared the bases with his
knock into the right-field corner to give the Cubs an early cushion.
It was just the second hit in 10 major league games for Higgins,
whose previous big-league action until Sunday came in June 2021.
