Lincoln Mayor Tracy Welch, assisted by his spouse Annette and city
of Lincoln Administrative Assistant Ashley Metelko greeted each
arrival, handing out maps of the downtown businesses participating
in the event and offering children their first treats of the day.
Then it was off for a very nice long walk around the heart of the
city. This year there were 33 downtown locations participating, plus
a 34th location on Pekin Street at the Logan County Safety Complex.
Costumes worn by the kids this year ranged for sweet little animals
to the most frightening of monsters. There were pigs and princesses,
terrifying clowns, Santa Claus was there and so was Little Red
Riding Hood.
Among those handing out candy, there were several animals involved
in the day.
Joe Ryan Country Financial offered up the “Batman” poodle, while at
Spirited Republic Fitz the dog was dressed as a bat.
At the Mary Todd Hallmark store kids had a chance to see a bearded
dragon.

At Lincoln Daily News, Bella was the center of attention with many
children, so much so that they seemed to overlook the collection of
candy for a time.
Several merchants around town commented that they were having just
as much fun as the kids.
Helen Rainforth at Abe’s said Trick or Treat with the Mayor was one
of her favorite days of the year.
At Sorrento’s Pizzeria, the ladies said that they had a blast! They
enjoy engaging with the kids and they especially enjoy seeing the
creativity in the costumes.
So, to say it was a very good day would not be an overstatement.
Thanks to Mayor Tracy Welch and the city of Lincoln for making this
a fun and family friendly fall event in Lincoln.

Lincoln Daily News had the opportunity to participate this year in
Trick or Treat with the Mayor as the newest downtown business. The
online news source moved into the heart of the city mid-October, and
the first thing on the “to do” list was to be added to Trick or
Treat list.
On Saturday, while Nila Smith was trekking the city with the kids,
LDN Staff Member Devyn Fry with her friend Gabe and Fur baby Bella
was joined by Karen Hargis on the front porch area of the offices at
520 Broadway.
The human members of the group were dressed up as pumpkin farmers,
and Bella was their prize pumpkin.
The farmers started out with about 700 pieces of candy to hand out.
When they had handed out 450 pieces in the first 45 minutes, Devyn
said they were concerned that they would run out, but fortunately,
they did not. At the end of the event, they had possibly 100 pieces
left, and estimate they served 300 or so trick or treaters.
In all, it was a great day for LDN, and one of the many positive
aspects of being a part of the downtown business community. |
