[November 09, 2022] No. 4 seed Brandon Nakashima overcame No. 9 seed Matteo Arnaldi of Italy 2-4, 4-3 (7), 4-3 (4), 3-4 (4), 4-2 on the first day of round-robin action at the Next Gen ATP Finals on Tuesday in Milan, Italy.

The 21-year-old American saved nine of 12 break points and won three of four break-point opportunities against Arnaldi, who had 11 aces but committed five double faults. Earlier this week Arnaldi was added to the field after top seed Holger Rune of Denmark withdrew to be available for the Nitto ATP Finals as the first alternate.

The Next Gen ATP Finals are the season finale for the best 21-and-under players in the world. Matches are best of five sets, first to four games in each set, with a tiebreak at 3-all. After two groups of four play a single round robin, the top two players from each group will advance to a single-elimination bracket.

The only upset of the first day was Swiss seventh seed Dominic Stricker beating third seed Jack Draper of Great Britain on the strength of three straight tiebreakers -- 4-3 (5), 4-3 (5), 4-3 (5). Draper saved six of seven break points, but Stricker had a 14-10 edge in aces and won 39 of his 45 first-service points (86.7 percent).

No. 2 seed Lorenzo Musetti of Italy took care of sixth seed Chun-Hsin Tseng of Taiwan 4-2, 4-2, 4-2. And fifth seed Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic beat eighth seed Francesco Passaro of Italy 4-1, 4-3 (7), 4-1.
