Obituary

Shirley A. Torbert Scogin, 80, of Wapella, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at Carle BroMenn Hospital in Normal.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at the Quiram-Peasley Funeral home in Atlanta with Mr. Ernie Harvey officiating. Cremation Rites have been accorded.

Shirley Ann Torbert was born on December 24, 1941, in Clinton, the daughter of Clarence S. “Dude” and Dixie Baughman Torbert. She was first united in marriage to Bill Ledbetter on September 5, 1956. She later married Charles Scogin on July 4, 1986. He preceded her in death on March 19, 2000.

Shirley is survived by her daughters: Lori (Dan Osborn) Murphy and Karen Underwood, four grandchildren: Jeremy (Kitiara Lancaster) Underwood, Jill (Wes) Foster, Candi (Jake) Taylor, and Samantha (Caleb) Ballew; twelve great-grandchildren: Ethan Foster, Mason Foster, Amber Foster, Ruger Underwood, Mailee Underwood, Remington Underwood, Gatling Underwood, Kimber Underwood, Dylan Taylor, Kylie Taylor, Maci Ballew, and Charli Ballew; one brother, John (Denise) Torbert; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Director

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; and one brother, Skip Torbert; one sister, Etta Hill; and one great-grandson, Hunter Underwood.

Shirley worked for Clinton Power Station and Thrall Car Manufacturing as Executive Secretary to the Plant Manager. Upon her retirement, she moved to Palisade, Colorado, where she lived for 11 years. Shirley was a fifty-plus years member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Wapella Christian Church. Her grandkids and great-grandkids were the lights of her life and she loved them very much. She enjoyed visiting Hawaii, eating sweets, watching the Hallmark Channel, and drinking coffee.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or DeWitt County Animal Shelter.

Final arrangements are entrusted with Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home of Atlanta.
