The event is an opportunity for the senior citizens
of Logan County to learn about and take advantage of all the
services that are catered to them and offered locally, and also
allows them to undergo some quick and easy health checks as they
			visit with vendors.

Senator Turner was on hand much of the morning and her staff had a
table set up offering guests information about the Senator’s office
			and state programs for seniors.

There were also several tables set up with staff from Lincoln
Memorial Hospital and Memorial Health Services. One station was
performance balance checks. The quick check gives seniors an
understanding of how well they are maintaining normal balance in
everyday situations. Loss of balance is dangerous for seniors
because it leads to falls and broken bones. When a test indicates
that a senior is having issues with maintaining balance the staff
was able to discuss with them what this means for the senior and how
to improve balance as well as tools to use to help.

LMH was also offering free blood sugar and cholesterol testing and
would forward those results to the senior’s physician upon request.

Staying active is important for everyone, and especially for
seniors. LMH had information about the new Trailblazers walking
groups that meet on Wednesday’s at the fitness trail around the
hospital. The information provided explained how walking has a great
benefit not only physically, but to “brain power” of function as
			well.

The Logan County Department of Public Health spoke about the local
prescription drug disposal program. Staff talked about the
importance of proper disposal of unused prescriptions and offered
information on the disposal options offered at the LCDPH. On the
table was a stack of free at-home Covid tests and guests were
encouraged to take a couple home with them.

There were several local senior living facilities
			present to speak with guests.

Castle Manor talked about the supportive living program offered by
the facility. They were also sharing samples of a very tasty, yet
sugar free fall treat and handing out recipes for their pumpkin
			whip.

Janelle Woolard represented the Christian Village and Christian
Homes. She had some nice gifts that she was awarding to those who
were able to answer her trivia questions correctly. Questions were
focused on senior living in Lincoln and included “How many long-term
care facilities are in Lincoln,” and which long-term care facility
is the oldest one in town?

Deb Maaks was on hand representing Copper Creek Cottages Memory
Care. She was there to talk with guests about what happens when they
need help and how Copper Creek can provide that help. She had
several great gifts laid out for those who stopped by her tables.

Georgia Allison was talking about the Silver Fox Fitness program and
handing out some cute little silver fox key chains and clip charms.
Her storyboard explained why it is important for seniors to get into
fitness, and she was there to demonstrate and explain how that the
Silver Fox program is fun and easy.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources representatives spoke
about the many parks in Illinois and promoted fishing as a fun way
to relax and enjoy outdoor time without a lot of exertion or
expense. For those who are a little more “old school” and less techy,
they were giving out free copies of the new 2022 Illinois road map.

The turnout for the senior health fair was very good this year with
tables and presenters staying busy throughout the morning. The event
was free to attend and well worthwhile of those who were interested
in learning more about staying healthy and independent and what the
options are when a little help is needed.
