[April 03, 2023]  MIDDLETOWN - James Lee Stone, 96, of Middletown, passed into the arms of his Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, March 27, 2023, at St Clara’s Rehab & Senior Care in Lincoln.

Service:  Graveside service at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Middletown

Celebration of Life:  Immediately following the graveside at the Middletown Bible Church.

Obituary

James Lee Stone, 96, of Middletown, passed into the arms of his Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, March 27, 2023, at St Clara’s Rehab & Senior Care in Lincoln.

James was born on May 21, 1926, in Irish Grove Township, Greenview, the son of Carroll Lee and Bessie Marie (Shumate) Stone. James married Shirley Jean Graham on November 10, 1946, at Irish Grove Presbyterian Church.

James is survived by his children: Michael Lee (Kathy) Stone of Springfield, OH, Penny Lynn (Herb) Brasher of Columbia, SC, Patrick James (Barbara) Stone of New Berg, OR, and Heidi Joy (Scott) Vieira of Houston, TX; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother Paul Allen Stone of Indianapolis, IN; sister Marjorie Ann Stout of Illiopolis, numerous nephews and nieces; cousin Carolyn Looker of Sidney, OH; and brother-in-law Robert Graham of Niantic.

James was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley; his parents; brothers, Kenneth C. Stone, and Robert H. Stone; and sister, Norma Jean Roberts.

James served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific on LST 970 (Landing Ship Tank), seeing combat at the battle of Okinawa for six weeks. He farmed for over fifty years in Menard, Mason, Tazewell, and Logan counties. He and Shirley were charter members of the Middletown Bible Church, Middletown, which started in their home.

A graveside service for James will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023, at Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Middletown, with Pastor James Terrell officiating. A celebration of James’ life will follow the graveside at the Middletown Bible Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in James’ name to the Stone family, that will be distributed among numerous Christian organizations in which they were involved.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
