Knapp Chestnut Becker Library and Museum in Middletown damaged by Fire

[August 01, 2023] 

At 12:27 p.m. on Friday, July 28, 2023 Middletown Fire, New Holland Fire, Elkhart Fire, Lincoln rural Fire and Logan County Paramedics were notified by Logan Dispatch that there was a working structure fire at 101 South Clinton Street in Middletown.

The Knapp Chestnut Becker Library and Museum, a historical building and the oldest structure in Logan County was aflame.

First arriving crews made initial fire attack and requested additional tenders from neighboring agencies.

Crews were able to keep the fire from spreading past the roof and were able to save most of the historical documents and items contained in the building.

items removed from the building have been taken to a secure facility until repairs can be made to the structure.

No civilians or fire personnel injuries were reported as a result of the fire that is currently under investigation.

Middletown Fire protection District would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance regardless of the high temperatures:  Logan Dispatch, New Holland Fire, Elkhart Fire, Lincoln Rural Fire, Logan County paramedics Association, Athens Fire, Williamsville Fire and the Logan County Sheriff's Office.

We also want to thank numerous members of the community who offered water and assistance in relocating the items saved from the fire.

All units cleared the scene at 3:34 p.m.
