4-H Barrow Auction

Though some may doubt it, ask any 4-H kid and he or
she will tell you that they love their animals and treat them with
great care throughout the year that they are raising them and
preparing them for the show season.

The novice to the 4-H auction may have been
surprised to learn that every animal in the sale ring has a name.
That is part of the responsibility of the exhibitor to give the
animal a name. Some are funny and some are serious, and some you
just have to say “Why?”.
Why would you name your steer tomato? Perhaps so that the announcer
could make a joke about a beefsteak tomato? We don’t know, but it
did happen.
Other interesting names came from the group. In
addition to Jacob Lawrence’s Tomato, Owen Boyer named his barrow
Ricky Bobby, and if you don’t get it, then you just ain’t no redneck
Nascar Will Ferrell fan. Ava Sanders named her pig Porky and Wyatt
Leinebach’s animal was just named “Pig.” Get it? Porky and Pig?
Porky Pig! And yes, ladies and gentlemen, Elvis was in the house
thanks to Palmer Scheets who gave the name to her 256-pound
Crossbred barrow.
On a more serious note, during this final segment of the auction,
two young exhibitors were recognized for accomplishments in 2022.
The annual Junior Carcass show is held in the week after the fair
each year. The 2022 winners of the Carcass show Peyton Schwantz in
the beef category and Brantley Conrady in the Pork category were
recognized with plaques on Sunday.
The top bid per pound in the swine sale went to Ella Bobell and her
Grand Champion Crossbreed Barrow named “Toothpick.” The 260-pound
animal brought in a top bid of $8.50 per pound.
