Obituary
John Elliott Matthews, 62, of
Springfield, formerly of Clara City, MN, passed away
on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Springfield Memorial
Hospital. He was born on May 28, 1961 in Quantico,
VA to Charles Eugene Matthews and Linda Barbra Young
Groves.
He is survived by his father, Charles E. (Carol)
Matthews; two children, Jeremy (Britany) Matthews of
Clara City, MN and Timothy (Dana) Loeffler of Mt.
Zion, IL; seven grandchildren, TJ, Emily, Carter,
Rylee, Mason, Elessa, and Lyric; one
great-grandchild, Stormy; five sisters, Veronica
Matthews of Yucca Valley, CA, Bess (Robert W.)
Getman of Yucaipa, CA, Barbara Nye of Springfield,
Paulette (Ignacio) Matthews-Gonzales of Laverne, CA,
and Sheryl Gibbs of Cornland, IL; and several aunts,
uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Linda Barbra
Young Groves; infant son, Adam Lee Matthews; infant
brother, Charles Eugene Matthews, Jr.; and sister,
Teresa Borero.
John served his country in the United States Army.
He was a history buff, especially involving the
topics of war. He was a self-employed carpenter and
had many skills. He was also an avid knife
collector. His greatest hobby and joy however, was
spending time with his grandchildren.
Cremation was accorded by Staab Funeral Home –
Springfield and he will be interred at Camp Butler
National Cemetery with military honors. |
