Authorities have "almost completely dispelled"
the theory that stray bullets entered the stands at Guaranteed
Rate Field from the outside, interim police superintendent Fred
Waller said Monday.
"We're still looking at every avenue," Waller told reporters.
"It's still under investigation. Something from inside, it
could've happened that way. We're looking at every avenue,
exploring every lead and everything that we can get."
A police report obtained by The Athletic said Chicago's chief of
police requested the White Sox suspend their game against the
visiting Oakland Athletics after the gunshots. Instead, the game
continued to completion but a postgame Vanilla Ice concert was
canceled.
"We made that request initially because we did not know what was
going on," Waller said. "We had reports of people being shot at
Sox Park, but that wasn't confirmed and so we allowed the game
to continue (and) not to create a panic."
According to police, a 42-year-old woman received a gunshot
wound to the leg, and a bullet also grazed a 26-year-old woman
in her abdomen. Neither the White Sox nor the police have
provided further updates since Saturday morning.
As the investigation continues, it is not clear how a gun would
have made it past security into the ballpark.
