Women's Top 25 roundup: Iowa's Caitlin Clark tops 3,000 points

 

[December 07, 2023]  Caitlin Clark scored 35 points, becoming the 15th Division I women's basketball player to pass the 3,000 career points mark, as No. 4 Iowa beat rival Iowa State 67-58 on the road in Ames on Wednesday night.

Clark, the reigning consensus national player of the year, shot 12-for-31 from the floor for the Hawkeyes (9-1). She knocked down six 3-pointers on 16 attempts and also had nine rebounds and five assists in the win.

It was the 41st time in Clark's career that she has scored at least 30 points in a single game. Clark now has 3,013 points for her career and is just 514 points shy of Washington alum Kelsey Plum for the all-time scoring record in women's basketball.

With 20 regular-season games left, Clark would need to average 25.7 points per game to reach it before the Big Ten tournament. She is currently averaging 29.6 points.

Iowa also got 16 points from Kate Martin in the win. Iowa State (4-4) got 15 points and 10 rebounds from Audi Crooks, plus 14 points and 12 rebounds from Addy Brown.

The Hawkeyes have now beaten the Cyclones in seven of the past eight matchups. Iowa opens Big Ten play on Sunday at Wisconsin.

No. 1 South Carolina 104, Morgan State 38

Freshman guard Tessa Johnson scored a season-high 16 points and was one of six Gamecocks to hit double figures during a rout of the Bears in Columbia, S.C.

South Carolina (8-0) got 14 points from Milaysia Fulwiley, 12 points each from Raven Johnson and Te-Hina Paopao, and 10 points each Kamilla Cardoso and Sania Feagin. Sophomore Chloe Kitts added a career-high 14 rebounds to go along with seven points.

Morgan State (3-6) was led by Tamaria Rumph's 11 points.

The Gamecocks shot 68.3 percent from the floor and 56.3 percent from 3-point range as they went on to lead by as much as 68 points.

South Carolina will face No. 11 Utah on Sunday in Uncasville, Conn., at the Hall of Fame Women's Showcase.

No. 5 Texas 106, Long Beach State 62

Taylor Jones tallied 21 points and 10 rebounds as the Longhorns raced away from the Beach in Austin, Texas.

Rori Harmon added 17 points, six steals and four rebounds as Texas (10-0) remained undefeated. The Longhorns also got 16 points from Ndjakalenga Mwenentanda and 10 points from Khadija Faye.

Savannah Tucker scored 22 points for Long Beach State (3-3).

Texas led 57-18 at halftime and went ahead by as much as 53 points. The Longhorns outrebounded the Beach 56-27.

No. 13 Kansas State 101, McNeese 39

Gabby Gregory scored 16 points to help the Wildcats rout the Cowgirls in Manhattan, Kan.

Ayoka Lee added 15 points, six rebounds and three assists for Kansas State (8-1), while Gisela Sanchez scored 12 points. Alva Mofalk and Emilia Tenbrock each scored 10 points to lead McNeese (3-6).

Kansas State jumped out to an 18-4 lead through one quarter and were ahead by 30 points at halftime. The Wildcats outrebounded the Cowgirls 58-27. Kansas State had 29 assists on 40 made baskets.

No. 14 Notre Dame 96, Lafayette 42

Hannah Hidalgo stuffed the box score with 26 points, six rebounds, six steals and four assists as the Fighting Irish routed the Leopards in South Bend, Ind.

Notre Dame (7-1) also got 17 points and 10 rebounds from Maddy Westbeld, 14 points from Kylee Watson, and 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists from Natalija Marshall. Halee Smith led Lafayette (4-5) with 10 points.

The Irish shot 56.9 percent from the floor and owned the rebounding battle 48-23. Notre Dame pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Leopards 28-8.

No. 15 Virginia Tech 98, Long Island 50

The Hokies set Cassell Coliseum records with 17 3-pointers and 30 assists as they raced past the Sharks in Blacksburg, Va.

Six players scored in double figures for Virginia Tech (6-2), led by Cayla King, who had a season-high 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting from 3-point range. Elizabeth Kitley added 17 points and 10 rebounds, Georgia Amoore had 10 points and 14 assists, and freshman Carys Baker had a career-high 18 points.

Mariah Elohim led Long Island (1-8) with 11 points.

Virginia Tech shot 17-for-35 from behind the arc, 48.6 percent. By halftime, the Hokies led 45-13.

No. 17 UConn 90, Ball State 63

Aaliyah Edwards had 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Huskies beat the Cardinals in Storrs, Conn.

Ashlynn Shade added 17 points for UConn (5-3), while Paige Bueckers chipped in 15 points, three assists and three steals in just 21 minutes of play. Madelyn Bischoff led Ball State (6-2) with 12 points.

The game also featured a matchup of sisters as Hana Muhl had nine points for Ball State while Nika Muhl tallied four points and three steals for UConn.

The Huskies scored 37 points in the first quarter and shot 58.9 percent from the floor for the game.

No. 24 North Carolina 81, UNC Greensboro 66

Lexi Donarski scored 22 points to help the Tar Heels snap a three-game losing streak by beating the Spartans in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Donarski shot 6-for-8 from 3-point range and was one of six players to score in double figures for North Carolina (6-3). Alyssa Ustby had 13 points, Deja Kelly had 12 points and eight assists, Maria Gakdeng scored 12 points, and Indya Nivar and Anya Poole each had 11 points.

UNC Greensboro (6-3) was led by Isys Grady's 17 points, while Kennedy Simpson had 15 on 5-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc.
