Obituary
Norman Lee Schroeder, 82, of
Plymouth, WI passed away on November 30, 2023 from a
very aggressive form of cancer.
Norm was born in Jefferson, IA to the late Florence
(Youngblood) and Irvin Schroeder, and, early in his
childhood, the family moved to the Schroeder family
farmstead in Lincoln, IL. He had many fond memories
of growing up on the farm.
Norm married Judith (Julius) Schroeder, on September
24, 1966. He is survived by Judith; daughters Kerri
(Brian) Jenny of Plymouth and their children Hannah
(Lucas) Barfknecht and Lauren, and Angela (James)
Wisch of Roscoe, IL and their children Aiden and
Adam; and siblings Lowell Schroeder of Morton, IL,
JoAnne Marlin of Lincoln, IL, and Marvin Schroeder
of Springfield, IL.
He valued education and the importance of lifelong
learning. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School,
earned his undergraduate degree in Biological
Sciences from the School of Education at Southern
Illinois University, and received his Master’s in
Geology from the University of Houston. Norm also
received grants to further his studies of geology at
the University of Wisconsin-Superior and the
University of Maryland.
Norm began his career as a professional educator
teaching science at Pekin, IL. In 1968 he moved to
Plymouth and taught in the Plymouth School District
for 38 years. He also worked part time at Sargento
Foods for 35 years. Upon retiring from teaching, his
family surprised him with a trip to Durango, CO.
Highlights of that trip included riding the Durango
& Silverton Train, whitewater rafting on the Animas
River, and visiting Mesa Verde National Park.
Norm enjoyed spending time with his family, trains,
traveling, history, collecting antiques, writing
short stories, camping, and photography. He loved
reading! A good book was always a welcomed gift for
him.
He was very proud of his grandchildren and their
accomplishments. He was interested in what they were
learning and was always encouraging them to develop
their talents. |
The family would like to thank Dr.
Stan Gutiontov and the radiation oncology staff at
the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic for their care and
concern for Norm during his treatment.
In accordance with Norm’s wishes, there will be no
service. A family day of remembrance will be held in
Illinois in the Spring of 2024.
Memorial gifts may be given to the
American Cancer Society.
Norm thought the following quote from Walter Hagen
was good advice to follow in life, “You’re only here
for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry. And be
sure to smell the flowers along the way.”
