NBA roundup: Pistons shock Warriors with buzzer-beating trey

[January 05, 2023] Saddiq Bey beat the final buzzer with a 28-foot 3-pointer as the Detroit Pistons withstood the shock of a game-tying trey by Klay Thompson a second earlier to stun the Golden State Warriors 122-119 in San Francisco on Wednesday night.

Bey's heroics came after the Warriors, attempting to rally to a sixth straight home win, appeared to force overtime when Thompson bombed in a 3-pointer off an inbounds play with one second showing on the clock.

Bojan Bogdanovic hit five of Detroit's 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 29 points, while Jalen Duren posted an 18-point, 11-rebound double-double. The Pistons have alternated losses and wins in the first four outings of their five-game trip.

Thompson had 30 points and Jordan Poole 24 for Golden State, which lost despite shooting 51.7 percent and making 15 3-pointers.

Cavaliers 90, Suns 88

Evan Mobley returned from a two-game absence and hit the game-winning shot with four seconds left to lead Cleveland past visiting Phoenix.

Mikal Bridges missed a fallaway jumper with Donovan Mitchell defending at the buzzer to allow the Cavaliers to hold on for their third straight win. Caris LeVert scored 21 points and Mitchell had 20 for Cleveland.

The Suns, who were led by 25 points from Chris Paul, lost their fourth straight and seventh in eight games. Deandre Ayton added 15 points and 18 rebounds as Phoenix finished its six-game road trip with a 1-5 mark.

Hawks 120, Kings 117

John Collins recorded 22 points and 12 rebounds and De'Andre Hunter added 22 points and eight rebounds to help Atlanta beat host Sacramento.

Trae Young had 21 points and six assists and Dejounte Murray added 21 points, six rebounds and three steals as the Hawks ended a four-game skid. Bogdan Bogdanovic added 17 points and eight rebounds off the bench for Atlanta.
 


De'Aaron Fox scored 25 points and former Hawks player Kevin Huerter added 24 points for the Kings. Harrison Barnes scored 22 points and Domantas Sabonis had 20 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. The double-double was the 15th in a row for Sabonis, tying the franchise mark set by DeMarcus Cousins during the 2013-14 season.

Timberwolves 113, Trail Blazers 106

Anthony Edwards scored 13 of his 32 points in the final 5:38 as Minnesota beat Portland in Minneapolis.

Rudy Gobert had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Minnesota. Luka Garza added 14 points and Taurean Prince scored 11 after missing the past 20 games due to a right shoulder injury.

Damian Lillard led Portland with 27 points, while Jerami Grant added 26, Anfernee Simons had 16, Shaedon Sharpe chipped in 13 and Jusuf Nurkic had 10 points and eight rebounds before fouling out.

Pelicans 119, Rockets 108

CJ McCollum scored 28 points and short-handed New Orleans defeated visiting Houston, the Pelicans' 15th win in their past 17 home games.

Jonas Valanciunas added 16 points and 17 rebounds, and Naji Marshall scored 16 for the Pelicans, who played without leading scorer Zion Williamson (hamstring). Second-leading scorer Brandon Ingram (toe) missed his 19th consecutive game.

Jalen Green and Kenyon Martin Jr. scored 16 points each, and Jabari Smith Jr. had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Rockets, who lost their fifth consecutive game.

Knicks 117, Spurs 114

Jalen Brunson scored a career-high 38 points while hitting the layup that put host New York ahead for good with 3:02 left against San Antonio.

Brunson, who previously had scored 34 points in a game, also had seven rebounds and six assists for the Knicks, who squandered a 12-point second-half lead before earning their third straight win. Julius Randle (25 points, 13 rebounds) posted a double-double, while Immanuel Quickley scored 15 points and Quentin Grimes added 14 before delivering a stop on the Spurs' last possession.
 


Keldon Johnson scored 26 points for the Spurs, who have lost two straight and eight of 11. Reserves Josh Richardson (20 points), Zach Collins (16) and Doug McDermott (15) all scored in double figures for San Antonio.

Magic 126, Thunder 115

Paolo Banchero had 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists as short-handed Orlando beat visiting Oklahoma City to end a three-game losing streak.

With Bol Bol in the NBA's COVID-19 health and safety protocol and three players serving suspensions due to an incident Dec. 28 against Detroit, the Magic had just nine players. Gary Harris and Terrence Ross scored 18 points, and Wendell Carter Jr. tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who missed the Thunder's 150-117 win over Boston the night before with an illness, scored 33 points Wednesday.

Grizzlies 131, Hornets 107

Ja Morant poured in 23 points as hot-shooting Memphis rolled up a victory against host Charlotte.
 


Desmond Bane had 19 points, Dillon Brooks added 18 points and Jaren Jackson Jr. supplied 17 points as the Grizzlies shot 50 percent from the field (47-for-94). LaMelo Ball had 23 points and 12 assists for the Hornets, whose defensive shortcomings were exposed throughout the game. He went just 7-for-23 from the field.

The Grizzlies reached the 100-point mark on a basket in the lane by Steven Adams with 1:20 to play in the third quarter, leading 100-71 at the time. Memphis began the final quarter by scoring 11 of the first 14 points before cruising to victory.

76ers 129, Pacers 126 (OT)

James Harden had 26 points, eight assists and six rebounds as host Philadelphia defeated Indiana to run its winning streak to three games.

Harden also blocked Bennedict Mathurin's reverse layup with 9.9 seconds left in overtime. Indiana's Buddy Hield (24 points, nine rebounds) misfired on a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer in OT. Montrezl Harrell contributed 19 points and four blocked shots, and Tobias Harris had 19 points and 10 rebounds. The Sixers played without Joel Embiid, who was sidelined due to left foot soreness.

Mathurin scored 19 points for the Pacers, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. Jalen Smith had 17 points, and Tyrese Haliburton contributed 16 points and 12 assists.

Bulls 121, Nets 112

DeMar DeRozan scored 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and hit three big shots down the stretch as host Chicago led most of the way in a victory over Brooklyn, whose 12-game winning streak ended.

DeRozan was 4-of-14 entering the fourth and finished 8-of-20 overall to help the Bulls fend off several Brooklyn comeback tries.
 


Despite Kevin Durant's 44-point showing and third 40-point game this season, the Nets took their first loss since falling at home to Boston on Dec. 4. Kyrie Irving added 25 points and Seth Curry contributed 22 off the bench as Brooklyn shot 46.2 percent.

Bucks 104, Raptors 101 (OT)

Grayson Allen hit a 3-pointer with 11.6 seconds left in overtime and visiting Milwaukee overcame a big Toronto comeback to earn the victory.

The Raptors went on a 28-7 surge in the fourth surge to tie the game at 97 on Gary Trent Jr.'s 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds to play in regulation. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 30 points, 21 rebounds and 10 assists for the Bucks, who had lost their five previous games to the Raptors.

Fred VanVleet had 28 points and 12 assists for Toronto, which opened a six-game homestand. They have lost four of their last five games.

Lakers 112, Heat 109

Dennis Schroder scored a season-high 32 points and Russell Westbrook added 21 points, nine assists and eight rebounds as short-handed Los Angeles earned a victory over visiting Miami.

Thomas Bryant had 21 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who were without LeBron James (illness) and Lonnie Walker IV (left knee soreness). Los Angeles won for the fourth time in its past five games and pulled off the victory without James, who had put up a total of 90 points in the previous two victories.

Bam Adebayo scored 30 points and pulled down 13 rebounds and Jimmy Butler added 27 points for the Heat, who entered with four victories in their previous five games.
