 "I like the idea of finding the beauty of a flock of
birds, or the bright red head of a woodpecker, while it also exists
as a warning for what is to come. For example, snow covered roads
and brutal cold.
"This rich history of this community is also to be celebrated.
Places like The Mill, The Courthouse, IGA...those are pillars here.
These aren't just places but the backbone of a community and the
backdrop for generations of folks who have come and gone and will
continue to do so.
"The trio of girls from Olympia, Jennifer and Briana were in my
class. Robin was a crush, a girlfriend and then a close friend well
after we both graduated. I remember watching all of them perform in
high school.
"My favorite is the dog with the stick. Even in brutal cold and snow
that dog is having the time of its life. I'm sure there's something
that can be said about making the best of a bad situation."

On a frigid sunny morning at Christian Village, more than a dozen
little birds sought to warm themselves in the sun, roosting on a
dormant shrub in front of the congregate building.
The sun warmed their bodies from the outside, and a well-filled
feeder nearby offered plenty of food to warm them from the inside.

The white plastic wrap is going up around the dome of the Logan
County Courthouse. The wrap will protect workers and the dome from
the elements as the courthouse restoration project continues through
the winter months.

The Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway has awarded the Logan County
Tourism Bureau $1,000 for the future construction of a pavilion on
the large lot behind the Mill on Route 66 Museum.
The LCTB plans to build the pavilion to provide a permanent shelter
for hosting events on the back lawn.
With the 100th Anniversary of Route 66 coming in 2026, the LCTB has
been working on strategic planning to draw further attention to the
Route 66 attractions within the county and increase tourist traffic
throughout the next four years.
Ownership of the Mill was transferred to the LCTB in early 2020. The
LCTB, with financial assistance from the city of Lincoln, has
completed a refresh of the exterior of the building and added
climate control to the interior. The pavilion is the next step to
making the Mill location a popular location for tourists and the
community.

If you pay attention to the wildlife, it will tell you when the
weather is about to change. On a mild sunny day, these two
woodpeckers spent much of their time feeding. This will give them
stored fat and energy so they won't need to get out as much when the
heavy snows are falling on Wednesday and Thursday. It might be a
good lesson for all of us. Plan ahead and stock up!

On Friday morning, the winds died down and the sun came up, creating
a lovely serenity on the prairies of Logan County. Thanks to Melissa
Smith for sharing this photo.
In stark contrast, this photo taken by Marcus Hoock shows just how
nasty the weather of the last few days has been and the problems it
caused for area motorists.
Thanks so much to all the readers who have sent photos of the snow
in their area. Lincoln Daily News will have a collection of those

Lincoln Elementary School District #27 and the Lincoln Police
Department coordinated a surprise card parade for long-time crossing
guard Carolyn Gober.
Rain or shine, or more recently snow, Carolyn works to keep our
children safe before and after school.
The Lincoln Police Department assisted the Central Elementary
students Tuesday morning as they showed their appreciation for
Carolyn's dedication to the children of Lincoln.

Olympia High School acknowledged its 2022 High School Hall of Fame
inductees at an Olympia boys basketball game in February.
Among the inductees was the 1998 Contest Play cast. The cast,
Jennifer Toliver, Briana Nannen and Robin Morrow, presenting their
play "Eleemosynary," won the IHSA Sectional Championship. They
placed fifth out of 60 schools in the state competition.
Other's recognized during the event included the 2009 Boys
Basketball Team that set and holds several school records, Class of
1983 graduate Bryan Hoffman, Class of 2009 graduate Matt Frahm, and
Cross Country coach Mike Neisler, who retired in 2021 after 32 years
at Olympia High School.

Illinois Senator Sally Turner is supporting a state bill to cap the
motor fuel tax on gasoline at $0.18 per gallon. The tax rate is
charged by the gallon, not according to price and is currently
$0.392. Turner says that capping the tax will save Illinois
motorists approximately $1 billion over 12 months.
The gas prices in Lincoln are taking a steep climb. On Monday the
price of gasoline was $4.19 per gallon. On Thursday evening, the
price at the same station had risen $0.30 to $4.49 per gallon.

Wednesday morning, Lincoln IGA staff and community members gathered
around Charlie Lee and Corey Sutton for a ribbon-cutting ceremony
celebrating the official reopening of the popular downtown grocery
store.
The store reopened on Monday, March 7th, after several months
invested in interior repairs after an arson fire in June of 2021.

E. G. Keith, the 11-year-old daughter of Ryan and Jennifer Keith of
Lincoln, has published her first novel, "Havoc." On Saturday
afternoon, she fielded questions about her book from a packed house
at the Lincoln Woman's Club.
