Carbon Dioxide Pipelines and the Mt. Simon Hub

[January 27, 2023]  The Coalition to Stop CO2 Pipelines is hosting a free webinar on Monday, February 6th, to provide information about the proposed CO2 Wolf/ADM Mt. Simon Hub pipelines. The Mt. Simon Hub is the most recent pipeline proposed for construction in Illinois and would carry high pressure CO2 from Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Macon County, Illinois.

The webinar will explore the impact on landowners and local residents and safety concerns associated with CO2 pipelines.

A growing fight is underway between private industry bent on constructing new pipelines across rural Illinois utilizing carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies and farmers, landowners, and environmental organizations who think that the new infrastructure is a safety hazard for nearby residences and will do little to reduce the impact of climate change. Opponents of the Wolf/ADM project are alarmed that a branch of the pipeline would connect to the BioUrja refinery, passing near low income and industrial neighborhoods on the south side of Peoria. This area already bears the burden of pollution and safety issues associated with the refinery.

Spurred by the promise of billions of dollars in federal tax credits, private companies such as Navigator CO
2 Ventures and ADM/Wolf Carbon Solutions are making plans to construct hundreds of miles of carbon dioxide pipelines across 21 Illinois counties.

The pipelines are intended to transport carbon dioxide emitted from industries in Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Minnesota to designated locations in central Illinois, where it will be pumped underground, with the hope that it will remain permanently stored.  Opposition to these projects is rapidly growing across the Midwest as residents cite concerns over safety, crop loss, damage to soil and drainage systems, and the forced taking of land through eminent domain.

WHAT: This webinar will discuss the nature of carbon dioxide pipelines and offer information on safety risks, farmland impacts, and how concerned residents can organize to make their voices heard.

WHEN: Monday, February 6, 2023 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Central Time
