Service: Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Lincoln Christian Church

Obituary

Dr. John J. Ellis, 92, of Lincoln, passed away January 12, 2023, in OSF St. Francis hospital, Peoria.
Cremation rites have been accorded by Holland Barry & Bennett Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 11, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Lincoln Christian Church. Burial will follow in Hartsburg Union Cemetery.

John was born February 2, 1930, in Michigan City, IN., the son of Jay Ora Ellis and Isabelle Hazel (Malm) Ellis. He married Dorothy Jean (Little) on May 24, 1953. He loved his wife dearly. He proudly served his country as a dental technician in the United States Army during the Korean War Era. Dr. Ellis worked for the Northern Regional Research Lab as a mycologist and curator of the culture collection. He was one of only three Americans with voting privileges in the Taxon Society. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and was a championship skeet shooter. John was also a skilled wood worker.

 

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; children Beverly Schorn (Ted), Kenneth Ellis (Pamela) and Debra Last (David); grandchildren John-Jamil Khan (Chelsea), Katherine Dragon (David), Carolyn Grafton, Eden Knizacky (Matt), Emily Osburn (Garth), and Bethany Henson (Thor); six great grandchildren; and siblings Richard Ellis, Jerry Ellis, and Nancy Kemeny. Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Tom Ellis and Peggy Tilden.

Memorial donations may be made to the Christian Village Auxiliary and will be accepted at the funeral home.
