Lincoln hosted Charleston on Saturday afternoon for a Varsity only
Apollo Conference game and in the end it was a mix of JV and Varsity
players combining to beat the Trojans 77-15.
Charleston has had its struggles this season, winning only two games
so far, and they were on the verge of cutting their Varsity program.
However, the decision was eventually made to move forward with a
young lineup. So on Saturday afternoon it was more of a teaching
moment for the young Trojans as they placed three freshmen, a
sophomore and a junior on the court versus the no. 2 ranked team in
the state, your Lady Railers.
To say the Lady Railers were off to a hot start versus the Trojans
is an understatement. With Jenna Bowman and Kloe Froebe getting
buckets early, Lincoln was off to a 9-0 lead in the first minute of
the game. The two girls continued to score for Lincoln, accelerating
the offense out to a 19-0 lead, mostly as a result of many steals in
the first few minutes of the game. Piper Whiteman would get some
nice buckets in the first quarter, as the shutout increased to 32-0.
Mia Clark and Lily Holmes also entered the game in the first
quarter, and per usual it was Clark quick to the basket to pick up a
couple points. She has been growing in confidence on the court for
the Lady Railers and it’s always good to see the freshman getting
some Varsity buckets. After Whiteman’s nothing-but-net jumper, the
Lady Railers were in front 36-0. A steal and layup by Froebe
completed the first quarter with Lincoln dominating 38-0.
Back on December 10, 2022 when the two teams met in Charleston,
Lincoln led 40-2 after the first quarter.
As the second quarter got underway in Lincoln, the JV team took the
court for the Lady Railers. With Grace Schneider, Mia Clark, Lily
Holmes and Ceana Adams guiding the offense, the Lady Railers stormed
out to a believe-it-or-not 50-0 lead. Unbelievable, huh?! When the
Trojans finally got a three to fall through the net at the 4:30
mark, even the Lady Railer fans were happy and relieved to see them
break onto the scoreboard. After Clark and Adams scored again in the
quarter and the Trojans added a free throw, the halftime score was
56-4.
Coach Taylor Rohrer put the starters back in for a few minutes to
start the third quarter. Whiteman was quick to score off the
offensive rebound and then it was Froebe with a long three to make
the score 61-4. Froebe would also make her average of 27 points per
game, so she would take a seat on the bench after that for the
remainder of the game. By the time the third quarter ended, the
Trojans had also gotten a few more baskets and finally hit
double-digits, 67-13 the score.

A running clock in the fourth
quarter had to be a sigh of relief for the Trojans, who really
played a calm ballgame the entire 32 minutes. One can only get the
feeling that years from now they’ll still be talking about that time
they boarded the bus for a couple hours and traveled to Lincoln to
play that really good Lady Railers team. While players often don’t
forget their good wins, they remember the times they took a beating,
too. The Lady Railers tried to make it as painless as possible, with
the game ending on a fair note as in JV versus JV. But then again
Lincoln’s JV team was very dominant this year and they had already
beaten the Trojans JV team by 40 points themselves back on December
10, 2022. At any rate, Holmes, Schneider and Adams finished off the
annihilation in the fourth quarter and the Lady Railers picked up
the 77-15 win.
Kloe Froebe led all scorers with 27 points.
Ceana Adams tossed in 12 points for Lincoln.
Lincoln improved to 25-0 on the season and 8-0 in the Apollo
Conference.
The Lady Railers still have Apollo Conference games left with Mount
Zion, Effingham, Taylorville and Mahomet-Seymour. In addition there
is a non-conference game on the schedule with Collinsville.
Next up for Lincoln is Mount Zion on Tuesday night. That contest is
an away game with the JV game scheduled for 6 p.m. and the Varsity
game set for 7:30 p.m.
