Bridge project near New Holland on County Highway 15 will result in closure until late September

Beginning July 5, construction will begin on two bridges near New Holland. The bridges carry County Highway 15 over the Sugar Creek floodplain and are located about 1.5 miles south of New Holland on 100th Avenue. The road will be closed to traffic during construction, which will last until late September.

The existing overflow bridge is 200 feet long and was built in 1963. The bridge was constructed with concrete deck beams. Those beams have developed structural cracks and need to be replaced.

The bridge deck will be completely removed. Minor repairs will be made to the concrete piers. Riprap will be placed to control further erosion. New concrete deck beams and new guardrail will be installed. A new asphalt overlay will be placed over the bridge.

While the roadway is closed, repairs will also be made to the bridge over the main channel of Sugar Creek. That bridge was constructed in 1988 and will require some minor repairs to one of the piers.

The project was awarded to Otto Baum Company, Inc. located in Morton, Illinois. The low bid on the project was $1,048,500. In 2018, Logan County was awarded competitive funding for this project from the Illinois Major Bridge Program which will cover $794,000 of the construction costs. The remainder of the cost will be paid with federal bridge funds and local property tax funds.
