DeWanna Bonner supplied 21 points and six
rebounds for Connecticut (15-5), while Alyssa Thomas had 19
points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.
DiJonai Carrington added 11 points and Tyasha Harris chipped in
six points and eight assists. The Sun improved to 8-2 on the
road this season.
Kahleah Copper's 22 points led Chicago (8-12), which has lost
three straight heading into the All-Star break. Elizabeth
Williams contributed 16 points, eight rebounds and five blocked
shots.
The Sky committed 18 turnovers, leading to 26 Sun points.
The Sun emerged from the first quarter with a 22-17 advantage. A
three-point play by Hayes gave Connecticut a 32-28 lead with
three minutes left in the half.
It didn't last. Marina Mabrey made a layup and then fed Copper
for back-to-back 3-pointers. Thomas made a couple of buckets in
the final minute of the half to cut Chicago's lead to 38-36 by
the break.
Copper finished the half with a team-best 10 points, while
Thomas and Hayes combined for 23 of the Sun's points.
A 6-0 spurt in the third quarter gave Connecticut a 45-41
advantage. Later in the quarter, Thomas made a jumper and then
found Bonner for a 3-pointer after a Chicago turnover to make it
56-48. A Bonner layup increased the lead to double digits.
Bonner's three-point play with 1:15 left in the third gave the
Sun a 63-51 lead. Connecticut carried a 63-53 advantage into the
fourth quarter.
The Sky made two turnovers in the first minute of the quarter.
Hayes then made a 3-pointer to extend the Sun's lead to 13.
After Chicago pulled within nine points, Connecticut put the
game away with a 7-0 run. Carrington got it started with a layup
and Hayes followed with a 3-pointer off Thomas' feed. Bonner
then converted a pass from Harris for a layup.
