Hungarian Grand Prix
Fifth-seeded Tatjana Maria of Germany had to rally for a 3-6,
7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Carole Monnet of France in the first
round in Budapest.
Maria converted six of seven break points during a match that
needed 2 hours and 35 minutes.
Similarly, No. 6 seed Elina Avanesyan of Russia came from behind
to beat Slovakia's Rebecca Sramkova 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
No. 7 seed Kamilla Rakhimova was less fortunate. The Russian was
bounced in the first round, with Australia's Astra Sharma
prevailing 6-3, 6-3.
No. 8 seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia beat Polina
Kudermetova of Russia 6-2, 6-0. American Claire Liu, Ukrainian
Kateryna Baindl and Slovenian Kaja Juvan also won in straight
sets.
