ATP roundup: Carlos Alcaraz rallies to win in London

[June 21, 2023]  No. 1 seed Carlos Alcaraz of Spain fought back from a set down to survive his first-round match against French lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) at the Cinch Championships on Tuesday in London.   

 

Rinderknech saved three of four break points in the first set while breaking Alcaraz on both opportunities. But Alcaraz, the world No. 2 player, won 75 percent of his first-service points (48 of 64) and smashed eight aces to advance in two hours and 34 minutes.

Alcaraz will face Jiri Lehecka in the second round after the Czech defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain 7-6 (4), 6-3.

No. 2 seed Holger Rune of Denmark beat Maxime Cressy 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), while Americans Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, the third and fourth seed, also breezed through in straight sets. No. 7 seed Alex de Minaur of Australia defeated Andy Murray of Great Britain 6-3, 6-1.

Bulgarian qualifier Grigor Dimitrov, Frenchman Adrian Mannarino and Australian Jordan Thompson also advanced.

Terra Wortmann Open

Polish sixth seed Hubert Hurkacz lost a long second-set tiebreaker but outlasted qualifier Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 6-7 (11), 6-3 in Halle, Germany.

Hurkacz fired 22 aces and won 60 of 67 first-service points (89.6 percent).

Third seed Andrey Rublev of Russia survived a challenge from China's Yibing Wu, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-2, while fourth seed Jannik Sinner of Italy also needed three sets to best Richard Gasquet of France 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan upset seventh seed Borna Coric of Croatia 6-3, 6-1 in just 68 minutes.

Other players to win their first-round matches included No. 8 seed Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain, No. 9 seed Alexander Zverev of Germany, Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, German wild card Yannick Hanfmann and Italian Lorenzo Sonego.
