MLB roundup: Yanks' Domingo German fires perfecto vs. A's

 

[June 29, 2023]  Domingo German pitched the fourth perfect game in New York Yankees history Wednesday night, taking down 27 Athletics in order in an 11-0 victory at the Oakland Coliseum.

When Esteury Ruiz grounded the right-hander's 99th pitch of the night sharply to Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson, German became the first major league pitcher to throw a perfect game since Feliz Hernandez accomplished the feat against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 15, 2012.

German thus etched his name in Yankees lore alongside three others who threw perfect games: Don Larsen in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers; David Wells on May 17, 1998, against the Minnesota Twins; and David Cone on July 18, 1999, against the Montreal Expos.

Giancarlo Stanton finished with a homer, a single and three RBIs for the Yankees. Harrison Bader and Volpe chipped in with two hits apiece, while Donaldson and Kiner-Falefa had two RBIs each. A's starter JP Sears (1-6) gave up seven runs, five earned, in four-plus innings.

Guardians 14, Royals 1

Jose Ramirez hit a grand slam during a five-RBI performance and Josh Bell homered and drove in four runs to help Cleveland trounce host Kansas City.

Bo Naylor belted his first major league homer while producing three hits, three runs and two RBIs for the Guardians, who have won seven of their past nine games. Ramirez had two hits, two walks and scored three times as Cleveland moved into first place in the American League Central.

Drew Waters had two hits and a walk for the Royals, who have lost 20 of their past 25 games.

Braves 3, Twins 0

Matt Olson homered and five pitchers combined for a shutout win over visiting Minnesota, securing Atlanta's three-game series sweep and extending the Braves' winning streak to five.

Olson went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a solo homer. Atlanta starter Kolby Allard was activated from the 60-day injured list and threw 4 2/3 shutout innings. Kirby Yates (3-0) earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of relief.

Minnesota starter Kenta Maeda (1-5) pitched five innings and allowed two runs on five hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. Royce Lewis went 0-for-4, ending his hitting streak at eight games and his on-base streak at 11.

Rockies 9, Dodgers 8

Ezequiel Tovar had two hits and three RBIs, Randal Grichuk and C.J. Cron also had two hits, and Colorado beat Los Angeles in Denver.

Jake Bird (2-1) pitched an inning in relief to get the win, and Justin Lawrence got the final four outs for his fifth save. Victor Gonzalez (2-3) gave up three runs in one-third of an inning to get the loss.

With the Rockies up 9-6 entering the eighth, Yonny Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly, Mookie Betts walked Freddie Freeman greeted Lawrence with a single to drive in David Peralta and make it 9-8. However, J.D. Martinez struck out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

White Sox 11, Angels 5

Chicago hit four home runs, including two from Seby Zavala -- who finished with four RBIs -- and cruised to victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.

The White Sox had 17 hits, including home runs by Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert Jr. For Robert, the home run was his 23rd of the season and fifth in his past five games. Zavala, Andrew Vaughn and Zach Remillard each had three hits for Chicago, while the Angels got three hits apiece from Shohei Ohtani and Brandon Drury.

White Sox starter Lucas Giolito (6-5) threw seven innings and gave up four runs and six hits. Angels starter Jaime Barria (2-3) allowed five runs on seven hits, including three home runs, in three innings.

Nationals 4, Mariners 1

Patrick Corbin flashed the form that made him a two-time All-Star, pitching seven scoreless innings as Washington defeated host Seattle.

Corbin (5-9) allowed five hits, didn't issue a walk and struck out a season-high nine batters. Keibert Ruiz went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Nationals, who won for the fourth time in their past five games.

Jose Caballero homered for Seattle, which has lost six of its past nine games and dropped its third straight series. Mariners starter Logan Gilbert (5-5) went six innings and allowed four runs on eight hits.

Blue Jays 6, Giants 1

Toronto erupted for five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat visiting San Francisco. George Springer had three hits, including a double and an RBI single, for the Blue Jays.

Toronto right-hander Trevor Richards served as the opener and allowed no runs over three innings. Bowden Francis (1-0) took over from Richards and tossed four innings of one-run ball for his first major league win.

Austin Slater hit a solo home run for the Giants, who had their 10-game road winning streak end. LaMonte Wade Jr. added three hits.

Reds 11, Orioles 7 (10 innings)

Will Benson tripled home a run in the 10th inning and scored on TJ Friedl's home run as Cincinnati overcame a late blown lead to take the rubber game of a three-game series in Baltimore.

Down 7-4, the Orioles used a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth to show sudden life and, after not scoring in six consecutive innings, tie the game on Adam Frazier's two-run home run.

However, Cincinnati had three runs just two batters into the 10th on its way to scoring four runs in the inning. Alexis Diaz (3-1) threw a scoreless ninth inning for the win, and Fernando Cruz struck out three in the bottom of the 10th. Keegan Akin (2-2) took the loss.

Phillies 8, Cubs 5

Nick Castellanos hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBIs as Philadelphia extended its season-high road winning streak to eight games with a win in Chicago.

Edmundo Sosa clubbed a two-run homer and Josh Harrison added a solo shot for Philadelphia, which has won three straight games overall and eight consecutive road contests for the first time since 2011. Aaron Nola (7-5) yielded four runs on seven hits over five innings but benefited from the Phillies' five-run second inning.

Philadelphia tagged Chicago starter Drew Smyly (7-5) for seven runs and nine hits through just 3 2/3 innings. Jared Young hit his first career homer in his 2023 debut and Dansby Swanson also went deep for the Cubs, who have allowed 20 runs during a three-game skid.

Pirates 7, Padres 1

Carlos Santana homered and Pittsburgh scored five times in the seventh inning to smack visiting San Diego.

Connor Joe and Henry Davis each added two-run singles and Josh Palacios added an RBI single for the Pirates, who have won two straight for the first time since a six-game winning streak that ran through June 5. Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller (9-3) allowed one run and four hits in six innings.

Xander Bogaerts hit an RBI single for the Padres, who have lost four in a row. San Diego starter Blake Snell (4-7) gave up two runs and three hits in six innings, with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

Brewers 5, Mets 2

Blake Perkins delivered a tiebreaking RBI single in the sixth inning for visiting Milwaukee, which went on to beat struggling New York.

Christian Yelich went 3-for-5, including an eighth-inning, two-run single for the Brewers, who improved to 4-2 on a 10-game road trip. Reliever Bryse Wilson (3-0) earned the win by tossing 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Tommy Pham homered and finished with three hits for the Mets, who fell to 7-17 this month. Grant Hartwig (0-1) gave up Perkins' RBI hit.

Rangers 10, Tigers 2

Dane Dunning struck out 10 in the longest outing of his career, Adolis Garcia belted a home run for the third time in as many games and Texas cruised past Detroit in Arlington, Texas.

Dunning (7-1) fell just short of a complete-game shutout. With two outs in the ninth, Andy Ibanez reached on an infield single and Kerry Carpenter homered to end Dunning's night. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and matched his career high with 10 strikeouts over a career-long 8 2/3 innings.

The Rangers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning. Marcus Semien and Corey Seager opened with consecutive doubles, and Josh Jung, Ezequiel Duran and Leody Taveras added RBI singles off Joey Wentz (1-9).

Astros 10, Cardinals 7

Jose Altuve and Jose Abreu drove in three runs each and visiting Houston used a five-run eighth inning to rally past St. Louis.

Altuve hit a three-run homer in the eighth after missing two games with a sore heel. Abreu added a two-run homer later in the inning to his first-inning sacrifice fly as he reached the 900-RBI mark for his career.

Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer for the Cardinals before exiting with lower back tightness. Paul Goldschmidt went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs.

Marlins 6, Red Sox 2

A three-run sixth inning and home runs by Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Garrett Cooper helped Miami to a win over host Boston.

Joey Wendle went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, and Cooper crossed the plate twice in Miami's fourth straight victory. Braxton Garrett (4-2) allowed just one run -- a Rafael Devers solo homer in the fourth -- on three hits across five innings.

Rob Refsnyder, Jarren Duran and Devers all had multiple hits for Boston. Devers scored both runs. Nick Pivetta (4-5) took the loss.

Rays 3, Diamondbacks 2

Josh Lowe's two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning rallied Tampa Bay past Arizona in Phoenix.

The Rays were down to their last out when Lowe laced his decisive double off Scott McGough (0-6). Trailing by two runs entering the ninth inning, Tampa Bay mounted its comeback. Yandy Diaz singled for his third hit of the game, Wander Franco reached on an infield single and Luke Raley ripped an RBI single to right.

McGough struck out Randy Arozarena and retired Isaac Paredes on a sharp line drive to Ketel Marte at second base. However, Lowe's two-base hit to the left-center-field gap was the difference.
