February 2023 Criminal Cases Report

[March 04, 2023]   During the Month of February 2023, the Lincoln Police Department responded to 1,078 incidents and generated 114 criminal case reports.

The following cases are being highlighted, due to their nature:

Between February 2nd and February 14th, 2023, Lincoln Police Departments Criminal Investigation Division conducted an investigation which resulted in the execution of a search warrant at a home in the 400 block of South Madison Street and the arrest of 30-year-old Devin Smith for one count of Aggravated Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault. Other charges are still pending, and the investigation is ongoing.

On February 9th, 2023, at approximately 12: l6 a.m., Lincoln Police Officers responded to a home in the 100 block of Frorer Avenue for a report of a robbery where shots had been fired.

Lincoln Police Officers arrived and found the two residents of the home who were identified as victims. This investigation revealed the suspects forced entry to the home and attempted to rob the victims at gunpoint. Evidence was recovered that indicated one shot was fired at each victim, both missing them.

One of the victims fought the suspects off, but was stabbed during the altercation. The victim who was stabbed was treated at a Springfield Hospital and later released.

The suspects of the crime are at large, multiple charges are pending and the investigation is still ongoing.

On February 9th, 2023, at approximately 7:49 p.m., Lincoln Police Officers responded to the area of Comfort Inn, 130 Olsen Drive for a report of shots fired. A witness provided a suspect description and later identified the suspect vehicle as Officers arrived. The Officers stopped the suspects in the vehicle identified by the witness, and during the course of the investigation, recovered a 10mm handgun. The Logan County Sheriff’s Department arrived to assist in the crime scene search and provided a K9 to conduct an article search.

The K9 indicated in an area the witness reported seeing the shots fired and a search of that area concluded in the recovery of two, 10mm spent ammunition casings. Two arrests were made for Reckless Discharge of a Firearm, 33-year-old Sergio Andrade and 25-year-old Marvin Martinez.

On February 10th, 2023, at approximately 9:57 p.m., Lincoln Police Officers responded to a report of a robbery in progress at Thornton's Travel Plaza, 2903 Woodlawn Road. Upon arrival, the Officers identified the victim and witness and learned the suspect had fled prior to the call for help. The suspect was described as a white male, approximately 6’ tall and 180 pounds, wearing all black clothing, a beanie style hat and a face mask. The suspect implied he was armed, but a weapon was not seen. The suspect passed a note to the cashier, demanding money. He fled the area on a bicycle after taking a large quantity of United States Currency. This case remains under investigation.

On February l6th, 2023, at approximately 12:30 a.m., a Lincoln Police Officer conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of 7th & Walnut Streets. During the stop, the Officer recognized probable cause to search the vehicle for evidence of a crime in progress.

During the search, a loaded 9mm handgun with an extended high-capacity magazine was recovered. One adult, 18-year-old Gage Cale and two juveniles were arrested for Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon as a result of this investigation.

On February 16th, 2023, at approximately 5:55 p.m., Lincoln Police Officers were called to a home in the 1100 block of North Kickapoo Street for a death investigation. Two people, an 18-year-old female and a 25-year-old male, were found deceased in a bedroom of the home. The deaths of these young people were found to be suspicious in nature and the case remains under investigation by the Lincoln Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.
