Obituary

Judith Ann “Judy” Funderburg, 84 of New Holland passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at St. Clara’s Rehab & Senior Care in Lincoln.

Judy was born on October 31, 1938, in New Holland, the daughter of Ed and Edna (Berns) Harnacke. She married Russell Funderburg on March 17, 1956, in Fairfield. They celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary this year.

Judy is survived by her husband; her children, Rochelle Funderburg of Champaign, Theresa (Russell) Morgan of Hartsburg, Tracey (Mike) Boyer of Middletown, and Stuart (Lisa) Funderburg of Springfield; her six grandchildren, Andrew Morgan of St. Louis, Michelle Boyer of Lincoln, Katie (James Coleman) Funderburg of Chicago, Maddie (Nathan Gerowitz) Funderburg of Schaumburg, Sam Funderburg of Chicago, and Healy Funderburg of Springfield. Judy was the last member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Elaine Lessen.

Judy graduated from New Holland High School and Illinois State University. She taught English & History at New Holland Middletown High School for many years and later was the librarian at Lincoln Community High School where she retired from in 2000.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in New Holland where she was active in Concordia Ladies Aid Society. Judy enjoyed gardening and was a master gardener. She was an excellent cook and collected many recipes which she prepared for her family.

During retirement Russell and Judy enjoyed traveling and were able to visit every state with the exception of Hawaii in addition to traveling to Germany, Italy, and Ireland.

Judy’s greatest joy in life was being with her family. She loved hosting family gatherings, especially Christmas, and being involved in her grandchildren’s lives. She will be deeply missed.

Russell was a devoted husband and cared for Judy for many years during her battle with Lupus. He would have it no other way.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Bivin and the staff at St. Clara’s for the excellent care they provided Judy.

Services for Judy will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Zion Lutheran Church in New Holland. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service (10 a.m. to 11 a.m.) also at the church. Burial will follow the services at Richmond Grove Cemetery in New Holland.

Memorial donations may be made in Judy’s name to Zion Lutheran Church of New Holland.

Services have been entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home, Lincoln.
