[March 29, 2023]  ATLANTA - Mack Donald “Don” Turner, 98, of Atlanta, passed away at 3:04 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal.

Visitation: Wednesday, March 22, 2023 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta

Service: Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home

Obituary

Mack Donald “Don” Turner, 98, of Atlanta, passed away at 3:04 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal.

Funeral Services for Don will be held on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home in Atlanta. Mr. Maurice Stribling will officiate. Burial will follow at the Atlanta Cemetery.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Mack Donald Turner was born February 28, 1925, in Atlanta, the son of Mack and Dovie Powell Turner. He was united in marriage to Bettie Jean Menzel on Aug. 18, 1946. Bettie preceded Don in death on Nov. 5, 2018.

Don is survived by their children: Sandra (Dennis) Smith, Susan Turner, Sheryl (Joe) Kaul, and Sally (Gary) McGinnis; six grandchildren: Lora (Matt) Puckett, Scott Smith, Sarah Kaul, Angelina McGinnis, Kolton McGinnis and Joessa McGinnis; one great-granddaughter: Ashleigh Smith; and special niece, Betsy Kindred Shifflet.

He was preceded in death by one daughter Donna Jo Turner, and two sisters: Norma Kindred and Ardus Terviel.

Funeral Director

Don was a 1943 graduate of the Atlanta High School and then served in the United States Navy during WWII. Following the war, Don and his father farmed together for many years until he went to work for the State of Illinois. Don retired from his position of foreman for the Illinois Department of Transportation in 1989.

Don was a 65+ year member of the Atlanta Masonic Lodge #165 A.F. & A.M. and the oldest member of the Eminence Christian Church. He loved music and played the saxophone and mandolin in a family trio. He also played drums for the Atlanta Community Band and his retirement community band. Don enjoyed watching NASCAR races and St. Louis Cardinals baseball, playing cards and spending winters in Florida with his wife, Bettie.

Memorials may be made to the Atlanta Rescue Squad.

Final arrangements are entrusted with Quiram-Peasley Funeral Home of Atlanta.
