Obituary
Irvin Carl Hobbs, 85, of Lincoln,
passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2023, at Copper Creek
Cottages Memory Care.
Carl was born February 8, 1938, in Lewistown, the
son of Irvin Russell and Maralee (Foutch) Hobbs. He
married Marian “Mickey” Funk on August 31, 1956, at
Zion United Methodist Church in Emden.
Carl graduated from Hartsburg-Emden High School
where he excelled in basketball and baseball. During
his entire school career at Hartsburg-Emden he had
perfect attendance. From the time he was three years
old, Carl never missed a Sunday school class. Carl
attended Lincoln College on a basketball scholarship
for one year. Softball and baseball were passions
for Carl. He played and officiated both sports. He
coached little league baseball and youth basketball.
Carl was a past president of the Hartem athletic
booster club. Hunting and fishing were other hobbies
that Carl enjoyed. He was a member of the Riverside
Rod and Gun Club. Carl was a fan of Dean Shirley who
drove dirt sprint cars and his son Doug, who raced a
dirt modified.
Carl’s dad worked for the Illico Independent Oil
Company. When his father passed away, Carl took over
the business, and in 1987, he purchased the farm
accounts and started Hobbs Oil. He retired in 2000
and Ag-Land FS bought Hobbs Oil Company. The
three-generation family business gas station located
in Emden was fondly remembered as the "Malfunction
Junction." |
Carl was an avid St. Louis Cardinals
baseball fan. During his life he followed local high
school and college athletics. Being such a sports
enthusiast, Carl watched his children's and
grandchildren's sporting events and never missed a
game. Carl was a very social and outgoing man who
used his quick wit and humor to make people smile.
He never met a stranger and found friends everywhere
he went.
Carl is survived by his wife, Mickey; children, Mary
Beth Jackson, Mindy (Brad) Halverson, Marian
(Dennis) Eimer, Douglas Hobbs, and Michelle Hobbs;
grandchildren, Kelli (Jeremy) Wells, Tyler (Que)
Halverson, Megan (Robert) Arseniadis, Lauren
(Michael) Hasten, Zachary Eimer, Evan (Brooke) Eimer,
Lindsay (Matt) Vance, Brock Maaks, Erin (Dez)
Dial-Duran; and sixteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and
son-in-law, Donald Jackson.
A memorial service for Carl will be held at 6 p.m.
on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at
Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
Visitation will take place prior to the service from
4 p.m. to 6 p.m. also at the funeral home.
