Members and guests at the May meeting of the Logan County Genealogical & Historical Society walk through history with District 27th fifth graders

 

[May 25, 2023]    Beginning with President Abraham Lincoln and ending with Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln Elementary District 27 fifth graders recently took members and guests of the Logan County Genealogical and Historical Society on a mini living history walk.

Abe Lincoln wearing his traditional stove pipe hat was portrayed by Mitch Ried with the villain Booth being enacted by Kyrell Kelly.

Other presenters included Makaya Taylor who selected her namesake Susie King Taylor. Taylor served as the first black nurse during the Civil War. Born into slavery, at age 13 she founded the first free African-American school for children. A Civil Rights activist, she was the first black woman to self-publish her memoirs.

Emma Babbit told the audience about Dorothea Dix, known for creating the first generation of American mental health asylums. She founded 32 hospitals and served as Superintendent of Army Nurses during the Civil War.

Mariah Bishop, cast as Harriet Tubman, escaped slavery to make some 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people utilizing the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, Tubman served as a scout and spy for the Union Army and was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war. She is known as an abolitionist and advocate for women’s suffrage.
